Traditional Piecing

Come Saturdays in Eugene, Oregon, the park streets across from the courthouse are transformed into an open-air market where artisans sell jewelry, clothing, toys, and furniture. Musicians play, and farmers offer up fresh produce, organic meats, seeds, flowers, jams, and jellies. It's a colorful, lively marketplace that includes a quirky water fountain with a metal sculpture of jumping fish. It is common to see many colorful characters in tie-dye who wear business clothes and carry Palm Pilots during the weeks The Saturday Market" has the aura of the marketplace—a lively spirit that makes you smile and a playfulness that is irresistible. To reflect this mood, I used batik fabrics, but theme fabrics—such as holiday or Americana—would be appropriate too. Avoid stripes for the bow-tie portion of the block.
