About the
Spokane Chapter
The Spokane chapter was organized in the late 1950's according to June Petersen who has been, since the early 1960's to present, the Secretery/Treasurer. It began with 17 members and grew to 36 at the high point. Call letters assigned to the chapter were "SW". Mr. O. Hugh Braese was the Grand chapter president with headquarters in Los Angeles, California. In late 1971 the club had faded until it was reincorporated in the State of Illinois in early 1973.
Beginning in 1987, current wire chief L. R. Keith "KY" began to work toward starting another chapter. With help from June Petersen the new charter was issued on January 1 1988. Call letters "SK" were chosen which was the old Spokane Wester Union office. "James J. Hill" was the name of the chapter since most members were former Great Northern Railway telegraphers. Bro. Keith was elected president but accepted the office only on a temporary basis. In April, 1989, Charles Dayley "Z" was elected president and served until June 2002.
In 1995 due to the influx of so many non Great Northern members, the officers changed the name to the "Spokane" chapter. At the same time a chaper newspaper was printed called "Dots N' Dashes- Dits N' Dahs." Avoiding a possible conflict with the name of the International paper "Dotd & Dashes", Chuck changed the name to "The SK Telegrapher."
At the present time we have 70 plus members in the chapter. While most members are land line telegraphers, some are proficient with International "CW" Morse code. Others are strictly CW telegraphers. The chapter has been active in promoting public telegraph exhibitions - some have been rather spectacular events.
The chapter has two major luncheon/ banquets each year: the last Saturday in April commemorating the birthday of Professor Samuel F. B. Morse, the inventor of the telegraph, and the last Saturday in October, celebrating the completion of the U. S. transcontinental telegraph line.
