Steven P. Levine has worked in the field of environmental and industrial health since 1974. His work has included the development and implementation of chemical exposure assessment methods and of management systems applied to occupational health and safety. He has been involved in consulting work in the chemical exposure and failure to warn areas for many circumstances but with an emphasis on vinyl chloride, isocyanates, silica, and manganese.

He has advised attorneys for defendants and plaintiffs, and individuals, companies, governments and associations on both workplace and community exposure issues. He has taught courses in industrial hygiene in the U.S. and globally. Since his retirement from the University of Michigan in July 2003, his consulting and teaching work have continued without interruption.
