Instructions for Docents

OPENING: You must borrow the keys from and return the keys to the Fire District #1 station on Newton Street near the high school, which is always open.  The keys open the front door and the inside doors to the museum at 4 North Main Street.  Directly in front of you as you enter you will see an alarm box.  Enter the code that you have received to disarm the alarm.  With the door shut, the green light will go on.  Put out the “Open” signs and open the large overhead door.  You will find a moneybox under the large table where you will sit.  Please use it for the proceeds from items you sell.  Please keep a record of what is purchased.  Please ask visitors to sign the guest book, which is an important source of information for potential fundraising and reporting.

CLOSING: Before closing the museum, please make sure that the signs are brought in and the moneybox is back under the table.  Check the doors, ending with the front door.  Close the front door tightly.  Punch in the code on the alarm box to arm it, and leave within a minute of doing so.  Return the keys to Fire District #1!

If you cannot fulfill your docent duty, you must find a replacement!  If you have trouble finding a replacement please call Bob Judge at 532-5792, Ann Root at 533-7552, or Jo Wojnarowski at 534-0198.

We must have two docents on duty!  If the second docent does not arrive within 30 minutes, for the 2007 season, call any of the people above.  If another docent cannot be found, you will have to close the museum.  The large front overhead door to the fire station bay area is old and takes some strength to open.  If you cannot open the door or if you have any other immediate problem as a docent, please call Bob Judge at 532-5792, Ann Root at 533-7552, Jo Wojnarowski at 534-0198, Brian Duncan at 536-7247 or Lin Pickle at 534-7126.

If you have not been a docent previously: It is not possible to put all the relevant information on one page here, so please visit the museum on a Sunday before you are scheduled to docent for the first time.  Ask the docents on duty that day to show you what is involved.  Make sure that you or your fellow docent will be able to open the overhead door.  If not, let us know, and we will make a change in the schedule.

The Museum

The firehouse was built in 1889.  Around 1970 it became obsolete and could no longer house the newer trucks.  We are working on replacing the overhead door.  For more information about the museum and the historical society, visit http://home.comcast.net/~southhadleyhistoricalsociety/.

            Downstairs are mostly fire-related items.

Upstairs is a large room has an exhibit that changes each year with a different theme.  For 2007, the exhibit celebrates “Canal Village 1792-1862.

In the 1890 Room, we have memorabilia of many kinds.

For easy accessibility to upstairs, use the Carew Street entrance behind the museum.

Toilets are upstairs.  There are fire extinguishers downstairs and upstairs, and in the 1890 room.  A first aid kit is in the office on top of the file cabinet.

The schedule on the reverse side of this page is posted at http://home.comcast.net/~southhadleyhistoricalsociety/docents2007.htm.  If you exchange dates with another member, please tell Bob Judge at 532-5792 or BobJudge@comcast.net.  We will post any changes there, so you can look at it the day before your docent duty.

This schedule lists essentially the same docents who served in 2006.  If you are not listed, and you can serve as a docent, please contact Bob Judge and we will find a date for you. Thank you for serving as a docent, which is essential to our Society’s work!
