 NAUSET CHESS CLUB RATING LIST
by Steve Senter

Notes by Donlan

One thing has helped me improve my game is to keep a journal of my correspondence chess
games in progress. The inspiration for this came from "Journal of a Chessmaster", by Stephan
Gerzadowicz. His current volume, "Journal of a Chess Original", can be a acquired from the author at Box 275, E. Temleton, MA 01438.
So here is an installment from my "Journals of a Chess Patzer", so to speak. The trickiest question of this game is: "What opening is being played?"  For it starts out as a King's Indian
Defense (ECO E61) and transpses into a Caro-Kann Defense (ECO B14).

  1. USCF 95RT23
    White: Lewis Incze (1688)
    Black: Mark Donlan (1634)

Remarkably, even though chess is centuries old of the term combination. While most definitions
concur that combination is a series of moves that involve a sacrifice, IM Jeremy Silman thinks that
that he and GM Yasser Seirawan's definition is the most accurate. It is that a "combination is a
sacrifice combined with a forced sequence of moves, which exploits specific peculiarities of
the position in the hope of attaining a certain goal."
In  this game from a USCF postal tournament it is such a combination the wins the game.

French Defense Winawer c18
USCF 95RT23
White: Mark Donlan (1634)
Black: Chuck Robbins (1768)

Here  is a game from the BU Open. My opponent, who didn't appear to be older than ten,
continued to find good moves in an open slugfest, which caught me by surprise. I have no doubt
that young  Mr. Spector has quite a future in front of him at the chessboard. Next time I think
I'll be a little more carefull!

Ruy Lopez C92
BU open, Round 4
White: J. Pina Jr. (1810)
Black: J. Spector (1325)

In 1995-1996 I had another opportunity to compete in the Boston Metropolitan League.
Our M.L.T. team included Kevin Dahn, Dennis Ruhl, Richard Chen, Julio Dagraca, and Matt
Bowman. Although the Boylston Chess Club won this year, we finished 4.5-3.5 and had a good
time. This game was from our second match against the Somerville Chess Club. The other three
team members had battled to a 1.5-1.5 tie.

King's Indian Defense
Round 5 2/9/96
White: Eric Allen (2014)
Black: Tom Fililpek (1900)
Time control G/90

What do all these acronyms mean, besides that I have too many opening manuals.  It means
that you can share in the knowledge.  Just tell me what opening lines you want and reimburse me ten
cents per page.
