People ask me, "why number 04 ?", and I answer them with,
"that's the number that put Racing in my Blood.
When I was about seven years old, I attended my first NASCAR race
at the old Riverside Raceway in Southern California. While the cars were
taking their pace laps, we all picked a different car to win the race. We didn't
know any of the drivers at the time. I picked Hershel McGriff in the 04 car.
Hershel won the race that day and the number 04 became my favorite for life.
NASCAR racing was now in my blood.
I subscribed to Stock Car Racing magazine and watched every race I could.
Richard Petty was my favorite driver for years. In 1978 Kelly and I became
Darrell Waltrip fans and still are to this day. In 1978 I started to follow
my dream and made the jump from spectator to driver. Unfortunately
for my bank account there's been a race car in the garage ever since.
For the most part, all of the racing vehicles I've had in my life all displayed the #04.
There was a period in time when my brother, Don, and I would co-drive the same
car. We found it easier to put an 84 on the car for him and block out the center with
duct tape to make 04 for me. During our Road Racing activities with N.A.S.A., they
would not allow numbers starting with zero, so I blocked out part of the 8 in 84
to make the number 34. When we built our first car for NASCAR competition we put
the number 84 on it. When I sold the car to the Regan family I allowed them to keep
the number 84. And now as we embark on the 2002 season, I am once again
behind the wheel of a Racing Car with the number that stated it all, " 04".
