The initial revolt is brutal. Both the Northern and Southern Sudan rise for the Mahdi. Cairo reels from the news that above the fort at Wadi Halfa, only the ancient city of Berber and the government stronghold of Khartoum remain in Egyptian hands, under siege. Otherwise, the great river is entirely controlled by the prophet. The Eastern and Western Sudan regions remain quiet -- although Darfur and Kordofan (Western Sudan) are utterly isolated -- but that situation is likely to change quickly as word of the Mahdi's victories spreads (and raises the revolt indices in those regions).
