This map shows the layout of the Sudan and the deployment of Egyptian forces before the cauldron boils over. Revolt indices are unknown (represented by "?" in the flags). Fearing the worst, the governor-general places large forces in Khartoum and Suakin and hopes to rely on their ability to counterattack swiftly and strongly should the river fall to the rebels. Everywhere else, only the barest defense is mounted.
