Edmund F. Nehrhood Biography and Civil War Narrative

Edmund F. Nehrhood was born April 1840 in Pennsylvania. On February 10, 1862, he enlisted as a Private in Company B of the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

The first order of duty for Company B was to report to Fort Ridgely, near the Minnesota River. They left Fort Snelling at noon on March 22, 1862, under the command of First Sergeant Thomas P. Gere. Through the snow they traveled up the Minnesota Valley, stopping at the Scott County court house at Shakopee the evening of the 22nd, passing throughBelle Plaine, and Le Sueur, Minnesota on the 23rd. They crossed the Minnesota River on the ice at Traverse de Sioux after dark and spent the night of the 23rd at the Nicollet County court house at St. Peter. The company reached La Fayette, Minnesota, on the 24th -- 18 miles from their destination. They arrived at Fort Ridgely at noon on March 25th, serving garrison duty and continuing their military instruction and drills. The company was especially well-trained in skirmishing and received additional training in artillery.

Private Nehrhood served with Company B during the defense of the Fort Ridgely in August. After his Company rejoined the rest of the 5th Minnesota near Oxford, Mississippi, on December 12, 1862, Nehrhood participated with the Regiment in Grant's Central Mississippi Campaign (November, 1862, to January, 1863),  the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi (May 18-July 4, 1863), the Meridian Campaign (February 3-March 2, 1864), the Red River Campaign (March 10-May 22, 1864), an arduous march through Arkansas and Missouri in pursuit of Price (September 17-November 15, 1864), the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee (December 15-16, 1864), and the assault and capture of Fort Blakely (April 9, 1865). During his service, Nehrhood was promoted to Corporal and then to Sergeant. He was discharged with the Regiment at Fort Snelling on September 6, 1865.

About 1864, Edmund married Jennie, born June 1840 in Ireland. The marriage probably took place after Edmund re-enlisted as a veteran in early 1864 and received a veteran's home leave.

At the time of the 1880 U.S. Census, 40-year-old Edmund Nehrhood was living in Fountain Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. He was working as a farmer and living with his wife, Jennie (age 39, born in Ireland) and three Minnesota-born sons: Willy (age 15?), George (age 11), and Clarence (age 6). While still farming in Fountain Township in 1900, a 15-year-old adopted daughter, Lillian F. (born February 1885 in New York) was the only child living with Edmund and Jennie; Clarence was also living in Fountain Township, and George was living in Iowa.

In 1902 Edmund Nehrhood moved to Olathe, Kansas. In 1920 he was retired and living at the Johnson County Jail with his wife and daughter. Edmund F. Nehrhood died March 30, 1922, at the age of 80, in Johnson County, Kansas. He was buried atOlathe Memorial Cemetery, 738 N. Chestnut, Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas; Plot: Addn 2, Block 1, Lot 32, Space W4.
