This is an easy 3.8 mile hike. After an initial climb of Mt. Lincoln, it's steadily downhill for 3.3 miles to North Valley Rd. in Pelham. Begin at Packardville Rd. in Pelham and enter the Caldwell Memorial Forest of the Univ. of Mass. Gently climb 220 feet to the summit of Mt. Lincoln.
There is a multipurpose tower at the top with 360o views. ![]() |
Military aircraft headed for Westover AFB seem to use the tower to guide themselves for landings. ![]() From this point its virtually all downhill until you reach the Buffum Falls Conservation Area. The trail leaves the summit on a service road then soon enters the forest. The trail goes NNW until it reachs a brook. It then follows this brook, WNW, sometimes through a steep ravine, until it reaches Amherst Road. Cross this road then continue west to Meetinghouse Road and Harris Brook. The trail is now re-routed around the Amherst Reservoir. Follow Meetinghouse Road, north, crossing both Harris Brook and Dunlop Brook. Now, the trail goes west, north of the reservoir and joins Harris Brook farther to the west. The trail then turns north, uphill, at Buffum Falls, just north of the junction of Buffum Brook with Harris Brook in an area known as Orient Springs. From the trail you view a pleasant series of cascades as Buffum Brook descends steeply from North Valley Road.
