Trail Map - South Section

This 4.5 mile section of the M-M Trail starts at Rt. 57 in Southwick, climbs to the top of Provin Mountain (map at left) then descends to the Westfield River (map at right).

Park on the north side of Rt. 57 west of the trail. The M-M trail passes through the gate of the Lane Quarry (Hikers have permission to use the trail). You soon travel beneath the towering cliffs of the quarry. About 50 meters beyond the cliffs the trail turns east and climbs obliquely to the ridge of the mountain. The trail junction is very indistinct. The trail is well marked but also indistinct. At 2 miles you reach the summit and the complex of communication buildings, satellite dishes and towers of WWLP. Visitors are welcome and water is available. There are also some good views to the west. You now begin descending and reach the Springfield Water Department's covered reservoir at about 3 miles. You can get a glimpse of the reservoir from the rocks but trespassing is not allowed. Continue north beneath a rocky slope through an open field. Soon you climb again, then descend to a powerline. The trail then crosses Rt. 187 and into Robinson State Park. It steeply descends to the rapids on the Westfield River and continues along the river. At a point where the river broadens you can see the next white blaze on the north bank of the river. However, there does not seem to be a safe way to cross the river! The nearest bridge is about 5 km (west along 187) in Westfield.

Trail Map - North Section

Return by walking south along North West Street in Agawam. This rural, lightly travelled road parallels the eastern slope of Provin Mountain. Continue until you reach Rt. 57, then turn right. Climb uphill to a saddle point at the Agawam-Southwick line, then downhill to the parking area.
