M-M Trail in Leverett, MA

From Shutesbury Road to North Leverett Road

This interesting section of the M-M trail passes through an 18th century farming community. You encounter stone walls, cellar holes, a mill site and a charcoal kiln as you gently climb then descend along the west flank of Brushy Mountain. Distance is about 4.5 miles. Return via Rattlesnake Gutter Road (to view "the gutter") and Montague Road.

Parking is available on Shutesbury Rd. southeast of the trailhead. You enter the M-M trail ascending an old wood road north of Shutesbuty Road. The trail turns west onto a wood road and descends to Mountain Brook. Shorty thereafter the trail turn north (at 1.0 mile) as you gently climb the western side of Brushy Mountain. At about 2.8 miles you reach the highest elevation. On the right you will find the ruins of the Jonathan Glazier homestead which is dated at 1790. A short distance along the trail, on your left, are the remains of a mill site. As you continue downhill stone walls parallel the road. At about 4.0 miles you will intersect Rattlesnake Gutter Road. The trail descends steeply to Old Mill Yard Road. An abandoned beehive charcoal kiln is located just north of the large warehouse building. The trail is now routed along Old Mill Yard Rd. As you cross a bridge over the Sawmill River you get a pretty view of an interesting cascade to the south. The trail then returns to Rattlesnake Gutter Road, goes east to North Leverett Road and then west on North Leverett Road to a power cut. Return to the parking area by following Rattlesnake Gutter Road west. After about 1 mile you enter "the gutter", a steep ravine with impressive cliff and cave formations on your right. Continue downhill until you reach Montague Road. Turn left on Montague Road. Shortly after you reach Leverett Center you come upon Shutesbury Road. A left on Shutesbury road takes you back to the parking area.
