Sundays in Patton Park

2009 Summer Concert Series

Welcome to the 7th annual Sundays in Patton Park, a FREE outdoor musical concert series in Hamilton, Massachusetts.

These weekly concerts are held in the bandstand at Patton Park (located on Rte 1A in Hamilton) on Sunday evenings from 5-7 PM.  In the event of rain, arrangements are made for an inside venue nearby—with the information posted at the park by 3 PM on the day of the concert.  This rain information and directions may also be accessed in a temporary message recorded at 978-468-4818.

Feel free to bring your own blanket and/or lawn chairs and a picnic.*  And don’t worry about the bugs!  Experience has shown that they only come out at dusk—after 7 o’clock!  As Patton Park is quite open near the bandstand, do consider the heat and late afternoon sun.  You may wish to bring sun block, hats, and/or other provisions for shade if appropriate.

These concerts are coordinated by a volunteer committee, which seeks monetary support and sponsorships for performances and advertising.   Funds are managed under the auspices of Community Service of Hamilton and Wenham, Inc..

ABOUT SIPP

The Sundays in Patton Park (SIPP) Summer Concert Committee was formed in 2002.  Its mission -- to revive a musical tradition in Patton Park and foster and promote a sense of community for residents of Hamilton and Wenham.  A focal point of the park is the traditional New England bandstand, which was built and dedicated in 1993 as part of Hamilton’s bicentennial celebration.  That year the gazebo played host to several concerts.  However, in subsequent years only occasional concerts have been scheduled in Patton Park.  With the new century and a renewed focus on building community, we hope to continue presenting free weekly concerts each summer.

Our committee organizes and hosts concerts in a variety of diverse musical styles, appealing to a wide audience.  Seeking to include bands that have a following on the North Shore and beyond, we have booked performers ranging  from musicians in our own communities of Hamilton and Wenham (Snowdonia and plan B) to performers with a regional following (Grupo Fantasia and 60’s Invasion) and sometimes even national recognition (Bill Staines and Allen Estes Band).

Committee members are all volunteers who plan and host the concert series and also seek all the funding for the performers, as well as associated costs for advertising [See SPONSORS].  If you have feedback for the SIPP Committee, have suggestions for future bands, or have any other questions or wish to contribute, email us at PattonParkHamilton@hotmail.com

We welcome your comments and ideas.  Please complete our survey [link]                     —or share your thoughts in person by joining the committee!

The 2008 SIPP Committee members include: Beth Myers, Jeanne Maurand, Melissa Elmer, Emily Hayden, Ron Chane,  and Deb Morrison and Phil Dodge.

Background

During the summer of 2002, several community residents organized five concerts, following the success of “Broadway in the Park”, a concert showcasing community talent and raising funds for Pro Musica [supporting music in the local public schools].  The following year we invited interested members of the Hamilton-Wenham community to join a new committee dedicated to establishing the SIPP summer concert series.  With the financial support of several individuals and organizations in Hamilton and Wenham who agreed to help sponsor this project, we presented 8 free Sunday concerts.  These proved to be popular, with audiences ranging in age from small children to teens to seniors—all enjoying great, free music in the Patton Park.  With expanded funding efforts in 2004 (including a generous grant from the Hamilton-Wenham Cultural Council), we were able to book 10 concerts, host a basic website, and print and send an informational concert mailing to every resident in Wenham and Hamilton.  In 2005 we commissioned a new logo (on the homepage) and poster design by Robin McMath.

The town-wide mailing now consists of a smaller version of the poster – in the form of a postcard, which residents can keep as a handy

reference through the summer concert season.  These cards are also available at the concerts.
