The W4FOK Solenoid Sounder
by Jim Farrior, W4FOK
"The Mill" is used by many land line operators. The American Morse Code is used by U.S. and Canadian land line operators and Australian land line operators use the International Code. Although every user would like to have a genuine telegraph sounder, they are hard to find at a reasonable price. For that reason, I designed a sounder substitute, which a number of users have built. One Australian user built a number of them for members of his dial-up network.Files containing the instructions for building the sounder are included with the program, which can be downloaded from my Web Page. Except for the solenoid, it can be constructed with simple hand tools and lreadily available materials. The original supplier of the solenoids no longer has them, and I have not been able to find a suitable substitute. Fortunately, I anticipated this, and obtained a supply. I still have some, and any interested Mill user can get one by sending me five dollars.
Ted Wagner, KB9RPD, sent me the photo below showing the fine looking one that he built. As you can see, it consists of the solenoid, a few screws, two wooden pieces, and some simple metal pieces.
