Photography Contest
The contest will be held during the month of March, with winners
announced on 3 April. For entry fees or more information, contact Russ
Kunze at 508-362-3231.
Time, Talent and Treasure Auction
The auction will be held 5 April at the West Barnstable
Community Building next door to the Library. Preview items at 6:30 p.m.
and enjoy homemade chowder, desserts and coffee. The auction begins at
7:00 p.m. If you have an item or a talent to donate, please contact the
Library at 508-362-2262.

Whelden to Sturgis Hike
Take a guided hike through conservation land from Whelden Memorial
Library to Sturgis Library in Barnstable Village on 13 April. The
distance is 6 miles, and the hike takes about 3 hours. Refreshments will
be available at the half way point and at the end. Meet at Whelden Library
at 12:45 p.m. The hike departs at 1:00 p.m. Adults - $10, Children 12
and under are free. Rain cancels this event.
Antiques Show & Sale
Saturday, 19 April. Many dealers will be showing their
wares at Barnstable-West Barnstable Elementary School on Route 6A. Admission
is $6 with proceeds benefitting both Whelden and Sturgis Libraries. For
more information, contact Carrie Bearse at 508-362-9230.
Puppet Show: "Becoming Butterfly"
24 April at 10:00 a.m. Learn how insects "grow
up," through the experience of a little monarch butterfly. Ages 3+
with a caregiver.
Not Your Average Yard Sale
The yard sale will be held 10 May, rain or shine, in
the West Barnstable Community Building on Rte 149 from 9:00 a.m. until
2:00 p.m. Donations of quality, saleable items are requested (please do
not drop items at the Library). No large furniture, TVs, or computer equipment
can be accepted. Call Jane McCormick at 508-362-2229 or Happi Childs at
508-362-6726 to have your items picked up.
F.O.W.L. Book Sales
The Friends of Whelden Library will resume book sales on 10 May 2008
from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Call the Library for more information.
Volunteers Needed
Whelden needs volunteers for shelving/shelf reading (that is, making sure
the books are shelved properly). Stop by if you want to help!

Citizen of the Year
The Trustees of the Library sponsor an annual award for the Citizen of
the Year, who is a person of any age who has made West Barnstable a better
place through their inspiration, dedication, and community spirit. The
award is based on nominations from the community. The 2007 winner is Lily
C. Tu. Previous winners are: 1995 - Joanne Wallace; 1996 - Bette Nilsson;
1997 - Jim Jenkins; 1998 - Audrey Loughnane; 1999 - Martin Wirtanen; 2000
- Neil Atwood; 2001 - Jim McCarthy; 2002 - Susan Maki; 2003 - Nancy Shoemaker;
2004 - Kris Clark; 2005 - Mary E. Burns; and 2006 - Helmi Viliesis.

Now in stock -- Images of America Barnstable Village, West Barnstable,
and Sandy Neck

This paperback book offers historic photographic glimpses, with
accompanying brief text, of these three places.
Using archival photographs, personal recollections from family,
friends, and local historians, and two libraries' historical resources,
the author has produced a look into the earlier life and times of
three of the Cape's most interesting areas on the north side.
Each autographed copy may be purchased by mail or in person from
Whelden Memorial Library, 2401 Meetinghouse Way, P.O. Box 147, West
Barnstable, MA 02668 for $19.99 (no tax). A shipping and handling
charge of $3.00 should be included for mail orders.
