John Stickley was
born around 1831 in Würtemberg, Germany,
according to the 1860 Census. This is the only census he appears
on. The census data indicates that he and his wife
emigrated to America after 1850 but before 1858, and that he died
sometime between 1866 and 1870. According to census records, his wife, Caroline, was born around 1838 and was also from Würtemberg. In 1860, they were living in East Donegal, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. By 1870 she had moved the family to Philadelphia, and by 1880 she was working as a seamstress, Lizzie was keeping house, and 16 year old Charles was working in a feed store. Eventually, Charles married Bella Hitchins, moved to East Lansdown, and took up a career as a liveryman in a stable. I am descended from Mable, the second oldest child. I barely remember her, but I had a great relationship with her older sister, Helen. Aunt Helen married Bob Kerr, and they lived in Audubon, NJ. They had no children, but they had Charley, a great big Macaw. Aunt Helen taught me to whistle, or at least gave me pointers on how to carry a tune. Thanks, Aunt Helen. Uncle Bob taught me a song to sing while we were fishing: "fishy, fishy, in the brook; come and dance on Chrissy's hook". I hate being called Chrissy, but still sing the song after 30 years.
