Reports of Investigations of Oregon and Washington haunted locationsMany websites on the internet feature what we will refer to now and in the future as "The List". This list contains supposedly haunted locations throughout the United States. I have yet to find which website is the original source of "The List", which became our basis for starting this web site -- to get more information, including historical, on these locations and to meet people who have actually been there and seen something. Following is a link to one version of "The List" as posted on theshadowlands.net. Oregon List / Washington List. Another list is available at Ghosts & Critters. Please click on the links above for either Oregon or Washington for historical background and research information for each location. We're a little scaredy-cat, and don't go out at night yet, so we're unlikely to witness orbs or ectoplasm since these don't show up much in daylight. We aren't into electronics yet, either. Since Leslie is sensitive to psychic phenomena -- she's the only equipment we're using at this time, except when we actually remember to take a camera or tape recorder. Investigation 03/28/06

Thornewood Castle, Tacoma, WA (drive by only) |
Time: mid-afternoon |
Pam's
Observations: |
Bed and Breakfast with locked gate -- we could only drive by and could see the upper back of the residence only -- access is to guests only) we're thinking about spending the night there in the summer (more day, less night!!). No paranormal sensations or feelings-- just a drive-by. |
Leslie's Observations: |
Not much to say about Thornewood Castle. Couldn't get close enough at all to get any paranormal sensations. The long driveway is security gated. Looks like we'll have to try to actually stay there overnight to check it out. |
Comet Lodge Cemetery, Georgetown, WA |
Time: late morning |
Pam's Observations: |
Since I was already aware from previous research that the cemetery had previously been desecrated and that there were missing headstones, my two main goals were to try not to step on anyone's grave, and not to fall in to an unmarked grave (it was really wet and soft and I've heard old graves can collapse). The grounds of the restored portion were soft, lumpy, and lean downhill. As we climbed up to about the middle of the cemetery, I experienced slight vertigo upon reaching our stopping point and everything seemed to be extra bright. I cannot completely discount the possibility that the vertigo was caused by the odd leanings of the grounds of the cemetery, and that the extra bright light may have been caused by the fact that I had changed my sunglasses to my regular glasses shortly before entering the cemetery and that the sun was trying to peek out through the rain off and on all day. We visited and read every headstone and walked the grounds. I did not experience anything further during our visit. The vertigo does bug me, though. |
Leslie's Observations: |
Driving by, you'd have no idea that this is anything but an undeveloped corner lot (besides the big sign that says COMET LODGE CEMETERY). There wasn't any real parking so we parked on the lower road in the gravel. As we walked to the crest of the hill, I became a bit dizzy and disoriented, almost a dream-like state. I would call it only a slight incline (and I'm not in that bad of physical shape) so I didn't believe it was from exertion. The cemetery was very calm and peaceful and I felt a sense of "welcomeness". We read each headstone (the best we could as many were in extremely poor condition from lack of upkeep). We walked around very cautiously not to disturb anything or anyone. There was a pile of unreadable headstones near a trunk of a tree at the crest of the hill. Standing there, looking downhill over the rest of the cemetery, the grass was this amazing shade of green that I can't fully describe. It was the most beautiful green I'd ever seen. I did not have on glasses or sunglasses to skew the colors and it was an overcast day. I felt a sense of joy and gladness. We walked further and I was bothered by a sensation from one of the trees. I got the impression of someone hanging from one of the branches. I tried hard to shake the feeling so that I could continue our observation. On our way back to the car, we promised all the spirits that we would visit again. |
Georgetown Castle, Georgetown, WA |
Time: mid morning |
Pam's Observations: |
Through internet searches, maps and descriptions, we located what we are confident is the private residence known as the Georgetown Castle. We drove around in circles until we located the correct home, then parked on the street, hoping we didn't look too suspicious to the neighbors. The home appears to be an old Victorian style turreted home. I did not experience anything on the drive by. |
Leslie's Observations: |
The house was pretty to easy to spot from descriptions and it seemed very "dated" compared to other houses on the block. I couldn't tell if anyone was living in the house because most of the furnishings were outside during the renovation. We drove around the block a few times and parked on the street trying not to look conspicuous. We just hoped that two women in a clunky-engine minivan at 9 AM didn't look like burglars "casing" the neighborhood. I didn't get any unusual feelings but then I was still sitting in the van. The first time we drove around the block, I SWORE I saw someone in the upstairs turret window. The person or apparition seemed to be a woman dressed in old-fashioned clothing --- or -- since residents of the house are aware of the haunted history, could someone be "playing games" with the unsuspecting public? |
Fred Meyer Store, Auburn, WA |
Time: late afternoon |
Pam's Observations: |
Since there are no dates on "The List" my first question was "Is the location of the shoe department today, 2006, in the same location as the paranormal happenings described in the list ?" You know how retail stores change around. Fortunately, we went on a weekday so there was only one other customer in the shoe department -- I walked slowly around the perimeter of the shoe department, then down each aisle, closing my eyes so as not to be distracted (like Leslie was, trying on shoes instead of looking for ghosts). No shoes flew off the shelves, but I had a strange sensation in a small section of one aisle -- like an area full of energy -- it's hard to describe -- a little like a buzz from too much caffeine. Because we had a question of whether or not the shoe department was in the same location as it was when "The List" was created, we then walked the entire store, but had no paranormal experiences. As we walked the aisles, Leslie spent more money and then we left. |
Leslie's Observations: |
Driving into the Fred Meyer parking lot, we both noticed that right across the street was a very old cemetery. Our first thoughts... had the cemetery actually been larger long ago and possibly on the Fred Meyer lot? We walked into Fred Meyer and noticed the shoe department to the far right. We had to pass by several 50% off clothing racks. I insisted we stop and browse to get a "feel" for the store (okay, Pam didn't believe that either). Nothing I wanted on the racks so off to the shoe department. Nothing looked or felt unusual about the shoe department as we approached. We both walked up and down the aisles. I didn't pick up any unusual feelings. For some strange reason, I skipped the middle aisle. I was a bit distracted by another person in the last aisle so took that opportunity to check out the Keds shoes. I was hoping for some "flying shoe action" while I tried on shoes, but nothing. Pam asked me about the middle aisle. I proceeded down the aisle. I felt a bit dizzy and disoriented and got a funny feeling in my stomach (not hunger as we'd already had our Starbucks and it was too soon for lunch). I definitely felt a "presence" of some sort. Pam helped me decide between two different pairs of Keds and we left the shoe department. We headed off to check out the inside perimeter of the store in the event that the shoe department had been in a different location at one time. I did not get any unusual feelings as we walked around. I did gather a few more needed items since I was going to have to stand in line to purchase my shoes. |
Highline Hospital, Burien, WA |
Time: 1:30 - 2:00 PM |
Pam's Observations: |
Leslie and I are visiting on the 4th floor, surgery wing about 1:30 - 2PM. We are about to open the doors of the surgery wing. Leslie is on my left, a wall is on my right. Behind us are only two people -- nurses talking to each other in front of the closed elevators. I can clearly hear what they are saying. I am talking to Leslie at the same time and then I heard a woman's voice (not real young, not old) say my name "Pam" as a loud whisper in my right ear. It was very clear. I said to Leslie "I could have sworn someone just said my name. I did NOT tell Leslie at this time that the voice was a woman's and that it was whispered, not spoken in a normal tone of voice. I also note that I did not recognize the voice as anyone I know. |
Leslie's Observations: |
(written by Pam) Later as we left the hospital about 2:30 - 3PM, Leslie and I are exiting the hospital through the main doors on the first floor to the outside. There are a few other people coming and going through the entrance, and two staff members in the lobby, none of whom we know. Leslie turned to me and said she just heard someone say her name. She asked me if the voice I heard was a woman whispering (as the voice to her was). I said "yes". |
Admiral Paul Nelson Mansion, Fort Vancouver, WA |
Time: mid afternoon Weather: sunny and hot Equipment: none Phenomena Witnessed: none |
Pam's Observations: |
Tuesday, Aug 15, 2006. Mid-afternoon. Did not call ahead and arrange to see the inside of the home, so are unable to confirm the dripping blood apparition, since that seems to occur inside. However the outside of the home is easily available without any need to trespass. Only a portion of the back yard was not visible. As far as the grass dying and coming back, I am sorry to say the grass was quite alive and very green on two different passes of the home at different times of the afternoon. Looks like no haunting today! |
Dr. John McLoughlin House, Oregon City, OR |
Time: mid-afternoon Weather: sunny Equipment: none Phenomena Witnessed: none |
Pam's Observations: |
Thursday, Aug 17, 2006. Mid-afternoon. Toured the home immediately after I finished touring the Barclay House next door. Did a self tour so I would be alone in case that might affect any experiences. Although there were others touring the house, I was alone the entire time I was on each floor, with the other group on the other floor. I went into every room and carefully inspected it. I also inspected and toured the grounds outside, checking out the gravesite and going around the home and looking at all the windows. On this day I had no paranormal experiences, but plan to return at a time when Leslie can accompany me since she is more sensitive to paranormal activity. |

Although I experienced several notably cooler spots in the store, there is no way to be sure it was not due to the construction of the building. No EVP was heard on the tape of this location. |
Leslie's Observations: |
Nothing other than the same cool spots that possibly are due to the construction of the store. |

My digital camera picked up what may possibly be an orb on our ascent to the tower. Does not show on any other photo. Wonderful views! Western State Hospital Ruins (Hill Ward),
Lakewood, WA
|
Time: 11:30 AM, Wednesday March 28, 2007. |
Pam's Observations: |
I experienced a slight headache and nausea in the vicinity of the main entrance of the ruins. It would disappear if I backed away. No EVP was heard on the tape of this location. No anomalies on digital photos or camcorder footage. |
Leslie's Observations: |
On the north side of the ruins, I had a momentary feeling of being extremely overwhelmed. Compass malfunctioned before we even stepped out of the car. It started to work and then just froze until we were within view of the ruins. There was only one wild compass reading -- on the side of the ruins opposite the main entrance. The compass moved wildly back and forth for a short while before stopping. After leaving the ruins, I had nightmares about the location for weeks. I thought I had "brought someone home with me" (it wouldn't be the first time!). I was really afraid I had made a mistake going to the ruins. |

Comet Lodge Cemetery, Georgetown, WA (REVISIT) |

Pam's Observations: |
Revisit to bring equipment and explore further since experiencing vertigo in the center of the cemetery on our first visit in Spring, 2006. I did not have any vertigo in this same location on this visit -- did not experience or sense anything paranormal. No EVP was heard on the tape, no anomalies on the digital photos. |
Leslie's Observations: |
I also saw the black cloud-like shape. |
"Jr. Guest's" Observations: |
In the section of cemetery nearest the main road, "Jr." kept seeing a black, cloud-like form behind him. This only lasted a short while. |
Muckleshoot Casino, Auburn, WA |
Leslie and our "Guest Investigator" from the Tacoma Ruins spent the day at Muckleshoot Casino. On the drive home, Guest asked Leslie if she saw the 'woman with the blonde hair and blue sweater sitting next to her in the casino, staring and smiling at us'. Guest was aware the individual was not there is the physical sense because she could only get glimpses of her -- if she turned to look directly at her, there was nobody there. The woman never said anything, just sat there. (Leslie did not see her). By the way, Guest won the jackpot twice during the time of this manifestation. |
Pam's Oregon home and relative's home 1400 miles away. |
Pam's report: I was awakened in the middle of the night by the scent of (really good smelling) pipe tobacco. It brought me fully awake, and was quite strong. I was wide awake - no mistaking what I was experiencing. There are no smokers in the house. I immediately thought of my grandfather, even though I know he didn't smoke a pipe. Later that day I found out that my grandfather's father smoked a pipe. About two days later, my aunt (who lives in another state) called my mom, and my mom asked about my great-grandfather's pipe smoking to confirm. She said yes, then she related that just a few days ago, she had been awakened in the middle of the night by the smell of pipe tobacco, and thought she was going crazy. My mom then told her about my experience the same evening. I cannot find any connection to the family except that the date of the manifestation was the birthdate of one of my uncles, son of the pipe smoking great-grandfather. Hey -- maybe I DO have some paranormal talent after all! |
Damascus Pioneer Cemetery, Damascus, OR |
Time: 9:30 AM, Friday, August 10, 2007 Weather: partly sunny, warm Equipment:Kodak LS443 digital camera,Sony M470 microcassette recorder, compass. Phenomena Witnessed: dizzy feeling, cold spots |
Pam's Observations: |
Nothing paranormal experienced. Actually had a very good feeling at this cemetery. I stood next to Leslie at the GOOSIC graves and saw she felt so cold that she had goosebumps, but I did not feel it. No abnormalities on photos, no EVP on voice recorder. No anomalous compass readings. |
Leslie's Observations: |
No negative feelings, pleasant. Great variance in temps some icy cold areas in the 'Barlow' burial area - accidentally stepped on a grave in this area and became dizzy. Also icy cold at graves of C.B. and Pearlie GOOSIC. Lighting issue looking through viewfinder in camera at the 'Barlow' burial area, but photos showed nothing in the area. |
McMenamins Edgefield Resort, Troutdale, OR |
Time: 1:00 PM, Friday, August 10, 2007 Weather: sunny and very warm Equipment: none Phenomena Witnessed: none |
Pam's Observations: |
Nothing paranormal experienced. Since we were not staying at the hotel, we were unable to enter a guest room, but we toured the gift shop, halls, verandas and public areas of the Main Lodge (Bed & Breakfast), then we toured the grounds. We went inside only two other buildings, the Winery Tasting Room and the Power Station Pub. |
Leslie's Observations: |
Main Lodge: Creepy feeling. In the Gift Shop in the Main Lodge, I got pressure in my head and very dizzy at a location near the rear of the shop. When I moved away, the feeling stopped. Got a very creepy feeling in the Women's Lounge (bathroom/shower) in the Main Lodge. On the porch of the Main Lodge, we sat in some rocking chairs, and I smelled an odd scent that reminded me of old people or nursing homes. Jerry's Ice House Pub: Didn't go inside, but felt creepy just looking in the freight door. Didn't feel anything out of the ordinary in the Wine Tasting Room or the Power Station Pub. |
Carnation Cemetery, Carnation, WA |
Time: Saturday, March 22, 2008, 2:40 PM Weather: partly sunny, cold, some wind Equipment: Kodak C613 digital camera,Sony M470 microcassette recorder, two compasses. Phenomena Witnessed: inaccurate compass readings; dizziness, nausea, sense of something bad having happened in the past. Possible activity involving a pinwheel. |
Pam's Observations: |
No abnormalities on photos, no EVP on voice recorder. Video footage of compass malfunction and possible activity with pinwheel -- not yet posted as the video is inconclusive. On both compasses, one held by Pam, one by Leslie, there were a number of places in the cemetery where both compasses clearly indicated the wrong direction. We brought the second compass into play to eliminate the possibility of a bad compass. Addendum 6/3/08: There is a grave with a colorful pinwheel on it. Despite the fact there was very littl breeze, especially at ground level, the pinwheel seemed to be spinning much faster than one would expect. While we originally dismissed this, a guest to our website also visited this cemetery, and witnessed the same thing, also noting there was no wind. |
Leslie's Observations: |
Near one section of the cemetery, felt light-headed, dizzy and nauseated. Got a sense that something bad had happened there in the past - not necessarily related to the burials in the cemetery. |
Black Diamond Cemetery, Black Diamond, WA |

No abnormalities on photos, no EVP on voice recorder. No compass readings. Did not experience anything paranormal. |
Leslie's Observations: |
Although the day was colder and somewhat windy, experienced several definite cold spots (even colder than the current outside temp) throughout the cemetery. |
