What's New?

April 17, 2005
Added a link to "Those Who Have Gone Before" , a photo of a "De Soto Christmas" reenactment c. 1967.  Looks pretty good too, not the usual De Soto Historical Society farb stuff.  Its not listed but it looks like it was done at Lake Jackson Mounds just north of Tallahassee.  Which was considered a like site for the Winter Camp before Cavin Jones' discovery of  its actual location behind the Motel 6 in downtown Tallahassee 20 years later.

I got a request for the food pages so I did a quick and dirty transfer of the old pages wisth no correcting of links.  Also the latest info on the next Drake's Raid came in so the calendar has been updated.  Dad and Katie made the local paper at the De Soto Anniversary event.

April 7, 2002

March was rather busy with events, so I haven't been as diligent as I should be in updating the web page.  Calderon's Company now has a boat.  Click here to see a couple of photos from the Christening.  We also survived the mile long row from De Soto National to Sneads Island.  I'm working on a photo page of that epic adventure.  In the meantime for your entertainment:

A VR of Calderon's Company in Camp (Need a Quicktime viewer.)

Breakfast Americana A documerical featuring Larry May and airing for the next five weeks.

Uploaded the Wardog page, with some updates & added some Aztec acounts too.

February 25, 2002

Went to upload the October issue of Entrada just before going on vacation and found that much to my dismay that couldn't upload anything.  After returning from Spain I discover that my ISP  (@home) was going bankrupt.  Attempts to upload anything during the time of transition between @home and Comcast.net proved to day the least unreliable.  Also during this time the Xoom/NBCI pages disappeared as they decided webspace free forever was not a wise business model and netscape likewise dropped their  original free pages as well.  So I'm in the process of rebuilding the site, trying to fix and update  some of my early attempts at html as well as fixing the resulting broken links as servers are switched.

Quick and dirty I've put up the Index page, What's New, the Events Calendar.  Also I've tabelized and generally cleaned up the Astolabe page.

Please bear with me during this transition.

September 4, 2001

Uploaded the September issue of Entrada.

June 26, 2001

Added music CD's to Sheila's Loot & Plunder page, along with some minor clean up and decoration..

June 17, 2001

Added Re-enactment will be a blast, in spite of some out of context quotes, and De Soto De Soto anniversary to the newsclippings section.  While I was at Drake's Raid in St. Augustine I talked myself into putting up a website for the Historic Florida Militia  (Hello Echelon).  Its a plain vanilla contact page, although I hope it can be expanded  a bit with articles and such.  Updated the Events Calendar with an end of the month event at FOCA.

April 1, 2001

Added quite a bit to the Conquistador Commeration and Newsclippings page.  First a couple of extremely non-PC photos from a De Soto landing reenactment c.1984.  Also, its been a busy couple of months reenactment-wise and I've added newsclippings from the Menendez Birthday Celebration in St. Augustine and one from the Sneads Island Timeline. Can you tell that its been raining a lot lately?  Also, sometime on April 1 the Calderon's Company index page passed 5000 hits, no one knocking on the door yet offering big bucks to sell out.
March 31, 2001
Added the latest addition to the newsletters.  I've finally come up with a name too!  It's Entrada A web-based newsletter for Conquistador Era Living History.  Added the Coronado Equipment List 1540 (arms & armor).  Added a couple of outside links to photos of surviving period tents and some general tweaking to the tent page.

January 27, 2001

Updated the Sheila's Loot and Plunder section.
January 6, 2001
Its been an even longer time since I updated the site, although having the the motherboard on my old computer die, has played no small part in the delay (About 2gigs archived on 1.2 floppies worth of uploading - which is why my new computer has a CDR) simply not getting around to it has played no small part.  The Events Calendar has been updated for the year 2001.  Fixed a couple of bad links on the Insults page, thanks to Hyperhero for the heads up.  I'm working on some more revsions this weekend, either that or taking the Christmas lights down.

October 14, 2000

Longtime since I've been back here, I've been busy getting ready for De Soto 2000, actually going to De Soto 2000 and  of course putting together a De Soto 2000 photogallery. April 15, 2000

Updated Metal Workers of the De Soto Expedition with a couple of additional passages that I inadvertently left off the original page.  Also, I noticed that I had added the FAQ link to the index homepage when I published the link to the new Metal Workers page.  So I've gone ahead and added the FAQ as yet another still under construction page.  When will I learn?  But if I wait til all is ready I'll never get anything up.

Adding pages, but not yet complete, to the Cabrillo Landing. Added some, stuff on 16th C. Spanish Saddles & Tack.
February 5, 2000
I've revised the e-mail contact address for Drake's Men (daviswalker@hotmail.com).  I've added yet another free web-space photo gallery.  This one's on Anglefire ( http://www.angelfire.com/fl3/calderonsco/index.html#photo).  So far its got pictures from the recent School of the 16th C. and a still under construction series from Cabrillo last October.

January 23, 2000

Finally, I got around to putting up,  well-the first part at least, of the photo gallery.  I'm not totally satisified as yet, but I fingured I might as well put up what I've got.  These are scanned photographs that look great in the phot scanning software, but appear dark and muddy when viewed in the Netscape browser.  I've tried to compensate for that by increasing the brightness to over exposure levels, which helps somewhat, but its still not there yet.  Maybe next Christmas I'll get that digital camera.

Maintenance items:  Removed some extraneous bullet points from Matchlocks that I found when I linked to it.  I fixed the counter.  Somehow, saving the index page in Composer screwed up the cgi file.  So I had to restart the counter at 1235+-, which is where I last remembered seeing it at.

January 22, 2000

Eliminated the repeated, "Juan Coles adds at this point that Juan Ortiz, being unable to speak in Spanish, made the sign of the cross with his hand and the bow so that the Spaniard might see that he was a Christian." on the Ortiz page.  Added more photos to the Winter Encampment photo gallery.

January 20, 2000

January 1999
Virgin site. (Well there's been some heavy petting going on as I've learned how to upload files & make revisions) Pretty much plain text in readable black on white, a few graphics, no animated flames or roatating 3D objects.  I've got about two years worth of news letter articles more-or-less cut & pasted on to this site., with another year to go.  A number of the articles are going to require some scanning and manipulation to get the images right.   So the photo gallery is on hold.  Like wise the breech loading cannon drill remains incomplete.  Its not quite the coherent site that I had envisioned, but then again at least the information is there. Its probably going to take another month to tweak the basics and then I can start revising the pages into a more sucessful whole.  Consider it a work in progress.  I may get around to the "Calderon's Company Manual" after all.
