Here's a stitcher's logic puzzle I made up. (I *hope* it's logical, anyway.)
Kathy
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Five stitchers decided to form a round robin. Each person was to choose a theme for his/her sampler and stitch the first segment of the sampler before passing it on to the next person.
The order the people decided to use when passing the samplers around was Jan to Pete, Pete to Hal, Hal to Nell, Nell to Og, and Og to Jan.
The themes, in no particular order, were flowers, birds, pulled thread band sampler, horses, and dogs.
Using this information, along with the clues below, determine which stitcher selected which theme. Assume that everything went according to plan, with each sampler passed on in the correct order.
Answer below...
Answer:
Use a chart as given below.
| flo | bir | ban | hor | dog | |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| Jan | | | | | | |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| Pete | | | | | | |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| Hal | | | | | | |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| Nell | | | | | | |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| Og | | | | | | |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
This means the only theme available for Pete is dogs. So the only theme left, flowers, must be Hal's.
Jan - birds
Pete - dogs
Hal - flowers
Nell - band sampler
Og - horses

About 3 months ago, I posted a logic puzzle for stitchers, the first logic puzzle I had ever written. There were several requests for a follow-up, and so here is my latest attempt.
Enjoy.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
As you may recall, the last puzzle was about five stitchers named Jan, Pete, Hal, Nell and Og. The five finished their round robin, but had had so much fun that they kept corresponding by email.
The two women (Jan and Nell) and three men discussed stitchery/needlecraft magazines. Each person has a subscription to one magazine. No two subscriptions are the same. Three of the magazines are "Nifty Needlework", "Love Them Samplers", and "Cute and Charming Country Cross Stitch".
They also discussed DMC floss, and how many colors each stitcher has. One person has 50 colors, one has 100, one has 200, one has 300, and one has the complete set of 390 colors.
Using this information and the clues below, determine the name of the magazine each stitcher subscribes to, and the number of DMC floss colors each person has.
1. Jan has more colors than Hal and more colors than Nell.
2. The two women subscribe to magazines with the phrase "cross stitch" in the titles.
3. Neither Hal nor Pete have the smallest number of DMC floss colors.
4. The man who subscribes to "History Stitchery" has the smallest number of DMC floss colors because he prefers to use Anchor.
5. The person who subscribes to "Only Cross Stitch" still hasn't completed the collection of floss colors.
6. Nell has more colors than Pete, but fewer than Hal.
7. Hal never subscribes to sampler magazines.
Hint--read through all the clues before starting to solve the puzzle. Solution below...
Answer:
Use a chart as given below.
| Onl | Nif | Lov | His | Cut || 50 | 100 | 200 | 300 | 390 | |=====|=====|=====|=====|=====||=====|=====|=====|=====|=====| Jan | | | | | || | | | | | |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| Pete | | | | | || | | | | | |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| Hal | | | | | || | | | | | |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| Nell | | | | | || | | | | | |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| Og | | | | | || | | | | | |=====|=====|=====|=====|=====||=====|=====|=====|=====|=====| 50 | | | | | || |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|| 100 | | | | | || |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|| 200 | | | | | || |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|| 300 | | | | | || |-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|| 390 | | | | | || |=====|=====|=====|=====|=====||
1. From clue 1, Jan can't be the person with 50 colors or the person with 100 colors. Also, neither Hal nor Nell can be the person with 390 colors.
2. From clue 2, the two women must subscribe to "Only Cross Stitch" and "Cute and Charming Country Cross Stitch". The men must subscribe to the other 3 magazines.
3. From clue 3, neither Hal nor Pete have only 50 colors.
4. From clue 4, the man who subscribes to "History Stitchery" has 50 colors. Since the person with 50 colors is a man, Og must be the one.
5. From clue 6, Nell must have 200 colors, Pete must have 100 colors, and Hal must have 300. This means Jan must have 390.
6. So, from clue 5, Jan must subscribe to "Cute and Charming Country Cross Stitch" and Nell must subscribe to "Only Cross Stitch".
7. From clue 7, Hal must subscribe to "Nifty Needlework" and Pete must subscribe to "Love Them Samplers".
Jan, Cute and Charming Country Cross Stitch, 390
Pete , Love Them Samplers, 100
Hal, Nifty Needlework, 300
Nell, Only Cross Stitch, 200
Og, History Stitchery, 50
