May 19

Hardy Ridge Loop  
Leaders: Lu Pinson and Becky Richardson
Hike 8 miles, 1800 ft.
r, on a new loop.  The connector between these two trails was completed in 2007.  Lunch on top with a view.  Drive 100 miles ($8).  2nd pickup 8:30 at AWHD ($5).

 

Wahclella Falls and Fish Hatchery  
Leader: Sue Barrett
Park at the Bonneville Fish Hatchery and amble over to the Wahclella Falls trailhead for a 3 mile, 300 ft.
r  walk to the most spectacular waterfall in the Gorge.  A loop at the end leads to a great bridge.  Upon return, check out Herman, the Sturgeon, and other fishy wonders.  Drive 100 miles ($8).  2nd pickup 9:15 at L&C ($4).

May 26

Dog Mountain  
Leaders: Jim Squires and Anne Wilson
Hike 7 strenuous miles, 2900 ft.
r  A scenic route with wildflowers (poison oak too!) with option of a more gentle descent.  A great workout!  Drive 125 miles ($10).  2nd pickup 8:45 at L&C ($6).  Shared bridge toll.

 

Mt Talbert

Walk 4 miles, 400 ft.
r  Explore this wilderness treasure camouflaged within our urban area.  There could be some muddy spots if the weather has been damp.  Drive 30 miles ($2).  2nd pickup 9:00 at CFM ($0).

June 2

Yaquina Head  
Leader: Sharon Westcott
EARLY DEPARTURE: 7:30 A.M. 
Hike 6 miles, 300 ft.
r  Explore bluff-tops, black cobble beach, view off-shore rookeries, lighthouse and visitor center at Yaquina Head Natural Area, followed by a sandy walk to Agate Beach.  You might want to bring your binoculars.  Short car shuttle.  Entrance fee $7 per car OR free admission with Golden Age pass.  Drive 260 miles ($18).  2nd pickup 7:45 at TW (also $18).

 

Old River Road  
Leader: Phyllis Towne
Walk 4-5 miles with little or no elevation gain, along Old River Road and interesting waypoints.  Drive 6 miles ($0).  2nd meeting place 8:45 at George Rogers Park, lower parking lot.

June 9

Wahkeena-Multnomah Falls Loop  
Leader: Mel Taylor
Hike 6 miles, 1600 ft.
r  Beautiful creeks, waterfalls and flowers.  Drive 80 miles ($6).  2nd meeting place at 9:00, at Multnomah Falls Lodge, I-84 East, exit 28. 

Triple Falls  
Leader: Terry Cockrell
Hike 5.5 miles, 600 ft.
r
, past Horsetail Falls, Ponytail Falls, and footbridge above Oneonta Falls to spectacular Triple Falls.  Drive 80 miles ($6).  2nd pickup 9:15 at L&C ($2). 

June 16Three Corner Rock  
Leader: Jaska Thompson
Hike 9 miles, 1900 ft.
r  Length may vary if weather warrants.  Follow a remote segment of the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington to a landmark rock pinnacle with encompassing views.  Drive 120 miles ($10), plus bridge toll.  2nd pickup 8:45 at L&C ($6).
Champoeg State Park  
Leaders: Gladys Goodrich & Gus Mohr
Bluebirds and History will combine for a delightful 4-mile low elevation gain walk at the State Park.  Celebrate Oregon?s sesquicentennial with a bonus: short film and new exhibits that highlight the State?s beginnings.  Drive 40 miles ($3).  2nd pickup 8:45 at TW (also $3).  State Park Pass required.
June 23

Indian Point  
Leader: Val Gibson

An 8 mile loop with 2600 ft. r  Climb the Nick Eaton trail to a viewpoint at Indian Point, returning on the Gorton Creek trail.  Drive 110 miles ($9).  2nd pickup 8:45 at L&C ($5).

 

Piedmont Loop   
Leaders: Barbara Parker & Alan Wells

Hike 5 miles with negligible elevation gain.  A beautiful hike in NE Portland, including a number of historic landmarks, and an especially beautiful rose garden at Peninsula Park.  This was the first formal rose garden in Portland.  Drive 30 miles ($2).  2nd meeting place 9:00 at trailhead on SE corner of Rosa Parks Way and Albina (three blocks east of I-5).

Silver Star Mountain  
Leader: Keith Henson

Hike 6.4 moderate to difficult miles, 1530 ft. r  Choice of Ed?s Trail (more interesting with walk-through arch, and several short hard scrambles) or old road to summit.  Great flowers and cascade views.  Drive 120 miles ($10).  2nd pickup 8:30 at JBC ($7).

Forest Park  
Leaders: Sue Lauritzen and Pat Lidrich

Hike 5 miles, 400 ft. r, on a Wildwood Trail Loop.  Stops at Arboretum and Vietnam Memorial.  Drive 20 miles ($2).  No 2nd pickup.

July 7

Multorpor Mountain   
Leader: Linda Gray

Hike 6 miles, 1000 ft. r, on mountain bike loop trail around south side of the mountain, plus great summit viewpoint.  Drive 108 miles ($9).  2nd pickup 8:30 at CFM ($7).

 

Central Salmon River  
Leader: Jane Halling

Hike 4 miles, 200 ft. r, along a river and through old growth forest.  Peaceful and pretty.  Drive 110 miles ($9).  2nd pickup 9:00 at CFM ($7).  NWFS Parking Pass required.

 

July 14

Harry?s Ridge (Mt St Helens)  
Leaders: Mel Taylor and Sharon Westcott
EARLY START 7:30 A.M. 

Hike 8 miles, 1000 ft. r, from Johnston Ridge Observatory to Harry's Ridge, overlooking Spirit Lake.  Fantastic views into the crater left by the 1980 eruption of Mt St Helens.  Includes some areas of steep exposure.  Bring lots of water and sun/wind protection.  No trees/no shade.  Hopefully we will have time to enjoy the excellent Visitor Center before driving home.  $8 Monument Pass fee (OR Golden Age Pass OR annual NW Forest Pass) required per person.  Drive 240 miles ($19).  2nd pickup 8:00 at JBC ($16).

Marquam Nature Park to Council Crest   Leader: Jayne Cronlund

Hike about 6 miles, 800 ft. r, with Three Rivers Land Conservancy Executive Director, Jayne Cronlund, through Marquam Nature Park in SW Portland .  We begin on Terwilliger Boulevard near the Marquam trailhead, and hike all the way to Council Crest Park, then down through neighborhoods with fantastic views along the roads. Drive 10 miles ($1).  No 2nd meeting place.

July 21

Siouxon Peak/Huffman Peak   
Leaders: Linda Gray and Meg Linza. 

Hike to two former lookout sites with views north to Mt St Helens and south to Siouxon Creek Valley.  Hike 5 miles round trip, 1300 ft. r, to Siouxon Peak with Linda.  Option to continue with Meg to Huffman Peak for 9 miles round trip, 1700 ft. r, with 500 ft. descent in the saddle.  Drive 150 miles ($12).  2nd pickup 8:45 at L&C ($8).

 

Mirror Lake  
Leader: Mickey Chewning

The path starts at a waterfall and climbs to a sub-alpine lake mirroring Mt Hood.  A beautiful sight on a sunny day.  Drive 106 miles ($8).  2nd pickup 9:00 at CFM ($6).  NWFS Parking Pass required.

 

July 28Soda Peak Lake  
Leaders: Val Gibson 503-635-0758, and Becky Rickardson 503-635-1365.  Hike 4.4 miles, 1300 ft.
r.  A short but challenging hike to craggy Soda Peak and its mountain lake in the Gifford Pinchot Forest near Carson, WA.  Great views at lunch on the east side of the peak.  Drive 160 miles ($13).  2nd pickup 8:45 at L&C ($9).  Shared bridge toll.  NWFS Parking Pass required. 

 

Umbrella Falls  
Leader: Betty Hefford, 503-635-2787.  About 5.5 miles, 800 ft.
r.  This hike will begin near Elk Meadows Trailhead, climb through forest and meadows to Umbrella Falls, continue traversing Mt Hood Meadows for fabulous flowers, and return via the Elk Meadows Trail.  Drive 128 miles ($10).  2nd pickup 9:00 at CFM ($8).  NWFS Parking Pass required.

 

Aug 4

Indian Mountain  
Leader: Stan Landeen
EARLY START 7:30 A.M. 

Hike 9 miles, 1400 ft. r, from Wahtum Lake up to an outstanding viewpoint of the north side of Mt Hood and the Columbia Gorge.  Drive 190 miles ($15).  2nd pickup 8:15 at L&C ($11).  NWFS Parking Pass required.

 

South Portland  
Leader: Arnold Panitch

Retired Professor Arnie leads a narrated walk in the old Jewish-Italian immigrant neighborhood of South Portland.  The 3 flat miles on paved sidewalks are divided in half, and walkers have the option of leaving after the first portion.  Total time is 2 1/2 hours.  The walk begins at SW 1st Ave & SW Meade, near the Lair Hill Café.  The walk makes a big circle and returns to the starting point by lunchtime.  Option to have lunch at the Lair Hill Café.  Tri-Met service is available on several lines.  Free street parking.  Drive 10 miles ($1).  2nd meeting place 8:45 at SW 1st Ave & SW Meade.

Aug 11

McNeil Point  
Leader: Joyce Bonds
EARLY START 7:30 A.M. 

Hike 8.7 moderate miles, 2300 ft. r  Beautiful views and spectacular wildflowers surround a stone shelter built by the CCC.  Drive 170 miles ($14).  2nd pickup 8:00 at CFM ($12).  NWFS Parking Pass required.

Fort Clatsop to the Sea Discovery Trail  
Leader: June Baumler 

This 6.5 mile walk with 400 ft. elevation gain, goes from Fort Clatsop to the ocean, approximating the route Lewis and Clark took from their winter headquarters to the ocean.  It crosses two rivers, marsh areas, forests, pasture land, past a pioneer church and cemetery, and finally arrives at the beach.  Car shuttle from Sunset Beach parking area.  Drive 200 miles ($16).  2nd pickup 9:00 at SPS ($14).

Aug 18

Cooper Spur (with options)  
Leader: Jaska Thompson

Hike 3 - 8 miles possible, 1000 - 2800 ft. r Hike a basic 3-mile loop, plus climb farther as you wish, to further viewpoints on Cooper Spur Ridge.  Drive 180 miles ($14).  2nd pickup 8:30 at CFM ($12).  NWFS Parking Pass required.

August 18   Ramble: The Oregon Garden  
Leader: Mickie Church

Walk 3 - 4 easy miles, 100 ft. r  A visit to the Garden at peak bloom time.  We will also check out the new Resort.  Drive 100 miles ($8).  2nd pickup 8:45 at TW ($7).

Aug 25

Bird Creek Meadows (via South Climb Trailhead)  
Leaders: Verne & Mickie Church
EARLY START 7:00 A.M. 

Hike 11 miles, 1500 ft. r  A moderate to strenuous trail that traverses a lava flow, crosses Indian Reservation boundary and suddenly enters a world of wildflower meadows.  Drive 220 miles ($18).  2nd pickup 7:45 at L&C ($14), or meet at 9:45 at Trout Lake Ranger Station.  NWFS Parking Pass required.

Bald Mountain Loop from Top Spur  
Leaders: Sue & Bruce Barrett 

Walk under 4 miles, some elevation gain, mostly in first 1/4 mile.  Moderate difficulty for a ramble.  Beautiful views of the mountain during our lunch time.  Drive 110 miles ($9).  2nd pickup 9:00 at CFM ($7).  NWFS Parking Pass required.

Sept 1

Little Huckleberry Mountain  
Leader: Kathy Ragain

Hike 5.4 miles, 1800 ft. r Berry-lined trail to panoramic viewpoint.  Drive 175 miles ($14) plus bridge toll.  2nd pickup 8:45 at L&C ($10).

Swan Island Dahlias & Molalla River State Park   Leader: Betty Cobb

Walk approx. 5 level miles.  Visit a world-famous Dahlia farm in bloom.  A leisurely hike, with lunch along the Willamette River.  Drive 40 miles ($3).  2nd meeting place 9:00 at Swan Island Dahlias, 995 NW 22nd Ave, Canby.

General Info
Welcome to our Tuesday series of day Hikes and Rambles, all within about a two hour drive of Lake Oswego.  Hikes are for hikers of intermediate ability. Rambles are usually shorter and more leisurely paced, with comfortable elevation gains and good trail conditions - great for beginning hikers. 

Meeting Place
All events leave from City of Lake Oswego West End Bldg (WEB), 4101 Kruse Way, Lake Oswego.


Hikes LEAVE promptly at 8:00 a.m.

Rambles LEAVE promptly at 8:30 a.m., unless otherwise indicated in description.

New participants should arrive 15 minutes early. Please park in the parking lot (back of building) off Kruse Way Place. See descriptions for 2nd meeting time and place.

Costs
Passengers share carpool costs at $.08 per mile (rounded to the nearest dollar). Mileages are roundtrip. Members of the Friends of Tryon Creek State Park ($30 per year or $40 per family) participate free, and non-members are welcome at $1.00 per trip.  There is a $1.00 registration fee payable by everyone on their first trip of each year.

What to Wear/Bring
Wear hiking socks and lug-soled waterproof boots. Wear or carry long-sleeved shirt and long pants.  Carry lunch, water, rain gear and extra clothing in a day-pack along with these ten essentials:  whistle, map and compass, flashlight, extra food, knife, waterproof matches, fire starter, sun/wind/insect protection, first aid supplies and space blanket.

Notes
Leave your daytrip plans with a family member or friend.  Leaders reserve the right to change Hike/Ramble locations because of poor driving or hiking conditions.  Participants are responsible for their own safety and must be at least 18 years of age, or accompanied by an adult.  No dogs, please.
