July 8 Trapper Creek  
Leader: Linda Gray
Hike 6 moderate miles, 800 ft.
 through forest, with lunch beside the creek.  Some may wish to do the climb to Observation Peak.  Call leader for details. Drive 165 miles ($13). 2nd pickup 8:45 at L&C ($9). 
Enid Lake Loop 
Leader: Betty Hefford
Hike about 6 miles, on an easy-going forested trail around Enid Lake near Government Camp.  We will then travel downhill to the Zig Zag Falls trailhead for a short hike to the falls.  This will be a car shuttle.  Drive 105 miles ($8).  2
nd meeting place 9:15 at MHNFC ($3).
July 15 Triangulation Peak & Boca Cave

Hike 4.2 miles, 700 ft.
 to a former lookout site with a great view of Mt Jefferson.  Then there's a bonus of scrambling to a hidden cave with Jefferson framed looking out the cave entrance.  Drive 206 miles ($16).  2nd meeting place 8:15 at TW ($16).  Note - This is hike one of a set of three.  If you are just going for this one day, be sure you are riding with someone who is coming back!!

Cape Lookout  
Leader: Jane Halling 
Hike 5 miles, 400 ft.
 on a forested trail to spectacular ocean views at the end of the cape.  The trail has some muddy spots, so boots are recommended.  Drive 190 miles ($15). 2nd pickup 9:00 at SPS ($13).

 

July 22

Mt Mitchell  
Leader: Jaska Thompson
Hike 6.2 miles,  2100 ft.
 This climb rewards with views of the south side of Mt St Helens from an old lookout site, amidst scenic crags and hillsides of wildflowers.  Drive 120 miles ($10).  2nd meeting place 8:30 at JBC ($7). 

SW Portland Parks  
Leader: Janet Liu
Walk 5 miles, 200 ft.
 Stroll along trails in our neighborhood parks and the roads that connect them.  Drive 2 miles.  No driver donation needed.

 

July 29

Salmon Butte  
Leader: Jim Squires

Salmon Butte, in the heart of the 44,600 acre Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness, provides great views, north and south, from Mt Rainier to Mt Jefferson.  If the road is accessible from the south, we will hike 3.5 miles along a mostly level old logging road before climbing the final 700 ft. over 2 miles to the summit, for a total of 11 miles round trip.  If we hike from the north, we will hike 4.2 moderate to difficult miles, 2700 ft.
 up a well-graded trail to the old lookout site at the summit, for a total of 8.4 miles round trip.  In either case, the driving distance is 110 miles ($9).  Please call for the location of the 2nd meeting place. 

Latourell Falls

Hike an easy 2.5 mile loop, 600 ft.
 to the top of Latourell Falls that plunges 249 feet over the lip of an eroded lava flow.  The trail continues to a secluded 100 foot upper falls and then weaves its way down again to the Guy W Talbot park where we started our hike.  We'll eat our lunch there.  Walking sticks are advised.  Drive 75 miles ($6).  2nd meeting place 9:15 at L&C ($2).

Red Hill

Hike 6 miles, 880 ft.
 Explore an old trail - from the Vista Ridge trailhead - to a peak and a small lake, with several great viewpoints of the north side of Mt Hood.  Drive 155 miles ($12).  2nd meeting place 8:45 at MHNFC ($7).

Umbrella Falls Loop

About 5.5 miles, 800 ft.
 This hike will begin near Elk Meadows Trailhead, climb through forest and meadows to Umbrella Falls, continue traversing Mt Hood Meadows for fabulous flowers, and returning via the Elk Meadows Trail.  Drive 128 miles ($10).  2nd mtg place 9:00 at CFM ($8).

Lookout Mt via Fret Creek

Try hiking a new route to Lookout Mt - 8 miles RT, 1925 ft.
 - a workout, but 1000 ft. less than from Hwy 35.  This follows a pleasant forest trail, past Oval Lake, then up along the ridge to the old lookout site with a spectacular view of Mt Hood.  Drive 170 miles ($14).  2nd meeting place 8:45 at MHNFC ($9).

Silcox Hut  
Leader: Sharon Hawley
Hike a sloooow 2 miles, 1000 ft.
 from Timberline Lodge up to Silcox Hut and back.  Enjoy a loooong lunch while sitting and admiring the breath-taking view (and catching one's breath).  Drive 130 miles ($10).  2nd
meeting place 9:15 at MHNFC ($5).
Aug 19

Sleeping Beauty  
Leader: Jan Moore
Hike 3.4 miles, 1400 ft
 Popular back country hike in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.  Hike through dense forest, opening onto a rock scramble to an old lookout with stunning views of Mt Adams, Mt St Helens, Mt Rainier, Mt Hood and the Trout Lake Valley.  Side trip to nearby Ice Caves and Natural Bridge.  August is huckleberry season!  Drive 200 miles ($16). 2nd meeting place 8:45 at L&C ($12).

Surprise Ramble
Leaders: Sue and Bruce Barrett
Expect an intereting local northwest ramble of approximately 4 miles with minimal elevation gain. Stay tuned for more details, or call leaders.
Aug 26

Little Belnap Crater  
EARLY START 7 AM
Leader: Elaine McWilliams, Hike 5.2 rough miles, 1100 ft.  through the spectacular lava fields of McKenzie Pass to a viewpoint of peaks from Mt Jefferson to Broken Top.   Drive 334 miles($27). 2nd meeting place 7:15 at TW ($26)  Note - This is hike one of a set of three.  If you are just going for this one day, be sure you are riding with someone who is coming back!!

Cooks Butte  
Leader: Julia Ferreira
A 6-mile, easy-paced walk in the Oswego Palisades area with a 350 ft elevation gain to the top of Cooks Butte.  Lunch spot will be at the Luscher Farm picnic area.  Drive 6 miles.  2
nd meeting place at 8:45 is United Methodist Church parking lot, 1855 S. Shore Blvd., Lake Oswego.  No driver donation needed.

General Info
Welcome to our Tuesday series of day Hikes and Rambles, all within about a two hour drive of Lake Oswego.  Hikes are for hikers of intermediate ability. Rambles are usually shorter and more leisurely paced, with comfortable elevation gains and good trail conditions - great for beginning hikers. 

Meeting Place
All events leave from City of Lake Oswego West End Bldg (WEB), 4101 Kruse Way, Lake Oswego.


Hikes LEAVE promptly at 8:00 a.m.

Rambles LEAVE promptly at 8:30 a.m., unless otherwise indicated in description.

New participants should arrive 15 minutes early. Please park in the upper parking lot (back of building) off Kruse Way Place. See descriptions for 2nd meeting time and place.

Costs
Passengers share carpool costs at $.08 per mile (rounded to the nearest dollar). Mileages are roundtrip. Members of the Friends of Tryon Creek State Park ($25 per year or $35 per couple) participate free, and non-members are welcome at $1.00 per trip.  There is a $1.00 registration fee payable by everyone on their first trip of each year.

What to Wear/Bring
Wear hiking socks and lug-soled waterproof boots. Wear or carry long-sleeved shirt and long pants.  Carry lunch, water, rain gear and extra clothing in a day-pack along with these ten essentials:  whistle, map and compass, flashlight, extra food, knife, waterproof matches, fire starter, sun/wind/insect protection, first aid supplies and space blanket.

Notes
Leave your daytrip plans with a family member or friend.  Leaders reserve the right to change Hike/Ramble locations because of poor driving or hiking conditions.  Participants are responsible for their own safety and must be at least 18 years of age, or accompanied by an adult.  No dogs, please.
