This website is dedicated to the world of Dragaera, as described in the published works of Steven K. Z. Brust, focusing on the military and battle history of the Dragaeran Empire, with a specific focus on the house of the Dragon.
This site is presented as if the visitor is a new student at the Terics Academy (a name taken from a reference in the Vlad book Dragon) and will contain articles consistent with the curriculum that such a student might find useful. (Please note, I'm not a professionally trained military theorist myself, and I am simply using this premise as an excuse to explore both the general history of Dragaera, as well as the House of Dragon.)
Unlike most other extant web sites on the world of Dragaera, this site does not confine itself to the information contained in the published books about Dragaera, and should therefore be considered non-canon fan fiction. There are numerous inventions, additions, extensions, and otherwise completely arbitrary pieces of information developed (with neither Steven Brust's knowledge nor input) exclusively for this site.
It is my intention in creating this site to stay as far away from the main characters of the published Dragaera books as possible, exploring instead many of the historic and tangential references from the books. In this endeavor, it is acknowledged that certain familiar characters (Sethra Lavode being most prominent) cannot help but be included from time to time.
Aside from this small explanatory section, this website is presented "in character", as if it were a real publication from inside the world of Dragaera. If you find this confusing, I recommend visitng the Lyorn Records wikicity which is a good resource on the terms and concepts used throughout this site.
Or else, just go read the books. I suggest starting with Jhereg (the first published Vlad book) and reading the Vlad series through in publication order. Then read the Khaavren Romances starting with The Phoenix Guards. If you make it through these, you might also enjoy Brokedown Palace.
All attempts will be made to prevent direct conflicts with any topic that Steven Brust may choose to write about--but since he's still writing books and (most uncharitably) doesn't give me advance copies of these works, there's always the chance for there to be discrepencies. If a conflict arises between any information contained on this site, and either the published works or statements of Steven Brust, this site must be considered to be in error. In the event of such, please notify me, and I will attempt to modify or remove the conflicting information as quickly as possible.
This site is intended for the dedicated (some might say addicted) fan of Dragaera. As a general rule, spoiler warnings will not be present on this site, presuming that interested visitors have read all of the books this site might ever refer to. Due to the focus away from the primary plots of the published works, this should not generally be a problem for the casual fan, either; however, from time to time, important facts from the books (especially the Khaavren Romances and the Vlad novel Dragon) may be revealed. If you are only a casual fan of the Vlad books, have not read the Khaavren Romances, and do not wish to spoil these works for yourself, you may want to leave this site now and come back after you have read these novels.
Academy Curriculm -- This is meant to be the "meat" of the site. I plan to post short battle histories set in the world of Dragaera. This may include examinations of battles described in the books, or else made up out of whole cloth about earlier periods of Dragaeran History.
Academy History -- So far this is just a brief summary of the History of the Academy, and a list of people I consider it likely to have graduated from it. Maybe someday there will be room for a story or two to go here, perhaps directly involving Terics himself.Academy Faculty -- So far just a list of all the "instructors" of the academy. You may recognize some names on this list.
Course Catalog -- This may wind up under Curriculum at some point, but it's a speculative list of the types of classes that the Academy would be likely to teach.
Academy Library -- This is an area for speculative fan-fiction. I intend to write stories myself to populate this section, but if you've got a story you'd like to contribute, I'd be willing to consider posting it. You would retain all rights and get full credit for any such contributions, but it would need to fit in with the theme of the site, and be up to my own highly subjective standards...
You might say a lot of the site appears to be just window dressing. You would be correct to say so. I just wanted to put a little style into the presentation to make the premise a little more believable.
The color scheme of this site is based on the colors of the House of Dragon. These are black and silver, which may be a little hard on the eyes when reading stories for long periods. I have done my best to make the text of a sufficient size to be readable on a 1024 x 768 display. This may affect the text flow for visitors who operate at 800 x 600 or lower screen resolution. If there is demand, I may develop a lower-resolution, or alternate color version of the site. Please let me know if this is something you'd like to see.
While this site has been put together primarily as a way to allow myself to play in the world of Dragaera, I hope you find it interesting and entertaining, and I welcome comments. Please e-mail me at lincicumREMOVEME at comcast dot net if you feel so inclined. (I also subscribe to the dragaera.info mailing list so you can reach me there, as well.)
