EXECUTIVE'S
CORNER
Can anyone tell me where the line is? It keeps
moving. The line I speak of is the one that separates education-based athletics
from professional and big-time college sports. It is often blurred, making a
distinction not an easy task.
Unfortunately, the influence of televised professional
sports, along with ad infinitum discussion on talk shows and chat rooms, has
conditioned the public to see all athletics from the same point of view. High
school sports seemingly have become the little brother or sister programs for
the colleges and pros. Add to that the expectation of parents and peers and is
it any wonder that
high school athletes can become confused?
Think of it. The most influential point of reference
today’s high school varsity athlete knows is that of professional sporting
events where high-paid athletes display in-your-face chest thumping, showboating,
and other belligerent acts. Their behavior is intended to belittle and intimidate.
That is all they have seen and so naturally it is what they have come to expect.
As one emulates the other, it is not hard to see why succeeding generations willingly
follow such behavior.
In the name of image, ratings, notoriety, and endorsements,
the ideals that sport is built upon can easily be cast aside. To combat this
distorted view, we must look inward to define the values
we seek to teach.
As parents, coaches, and athletic leaders, we are
accountable to clearly articulate the line that separates education-based athletics
from ‘Show Business’. If we fail to assume that role, we will have
missed a magnificent opportunity to educate by setting and adhering to a strong
set of values. We must all work to find that line and at the same time remain
strong enough to withstand the temptation to cross it.

Smartpuck
Photography contracts with the MSHL to provide photography
services to all playoff games. Please read the following
announcement regarding game photos:
The photographer for the MSHL, Smartpuck Photography,
helps to defray the cost of the ice slots for the MSHL
Playoffs.
The additional revenue helps us to maintain the number
of playoff spots that we have at the end of the season.
Therefore, we would ask your consideration that the parents
who wish to photograph your game, to please not go into
the penalty boxes, but rather shoot from other areas around
the rink. The photographers from the newspapers also usually
shoot
from these areas, and are able to get great shots.
Game photos are generally available at the rink soon after
the game is finished or at the Smartpuck Photography website.
The photographer
will provide a photograph for school newspapers
and/or the yearbook at no charge. Please contact Smartpuck
Photography directly at ptorre@atlanticbb.net or
at while they are shooting at the rink.
On an unrelated note, we have had a problem
where there have been multiple parents manning one penalty
box. The MSHL would
like to remind you that during the playoffs, we would like
two parents from each team (four total) working this area.
One parent from each team to man their penalty box, one scorekeeper
(visiting team), and one timekeeper (home team). This
will leave room for the players, and will ease the ability
for
those players to enter and exit the ice to serve penalties.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Good luck to all of the teams that are advancing in the
playoffs!

| JVD Games should be reported
to the scheduler. We will not keep statistics, but posting them
on the Master Schedule will aid the league in ice time allocations
and referee bills. |
