Geneva, Switzerland was called the City of Refuge because during the sixteenth century Geneva's early (1536) independence fostered the Reformation and made the town a haven for protestant refugees. A memorial wall has been built and dedicated to the Reformation. The Reformation Monument is adored with statues of the great leaders including John Calvin, Theorador Beza, John Knox, and William Farel. Surronding these figures is the phrase, Post Tenebras Lux-"After darkness, light."
Sola Scriptura is known as the formal principle of the Reformation, that is, it is this conviction that gives form to all else, that leads us to the Bible alone as the arbiter of truth. John Calvin put it this way: There is no authority in the church of God but what is received from Him. If then we admit of a doctrine, it must not be borrowed from the authority or wisdom of men, but we must know that it came from God. This is a notable point; for God will prove thereby whether we be His people or not. He is our King indeed, because we have no laws nor ordinances except from Him.
