My car was purchased originally by an older woman in 1969 at a Dodge dealer in Auburn, Washington. She ordered it with some special options such as the Rally dash, bucket seats and console, rear window defroster (great for our Pacific Northwest winters) and the 383 Magnum. She had the car for 30 years until 1999 when her kids insisted she sell it as they were concerned she was getting too old to drive. At the time of the sale, it only had 60,000 original miles!! She kept every receipt for every repair - from oil changes to the original invoice, all of which I still have!! I guess she didn't want to be present when they sold the car as it was her 'baby' and she was pretty sad about letting it go. They sold it to the second owner, who put disk brakes up front, new steering box and all new front end parts. There was some damage to the grill and nose piece which he also fixed. The driver's seat must have had a rip or cracks as he replaced the center section of the seat, but the rest of the interior is in really good shape. The clock works intermittently, but all other gauges and lights work. He gave it a fresh coat of paint but the vinyl top is original and is in really good shape. The first owner was said to have kept it garaged, or at least in a carport for the 30 years she had it. He also put FlowMaster mufflers on it and the chrome tips. I bought the car in early August of 2003 and other than keeping it clean and the usual maintenaince, have't done anything to it. I've bought new floor mats for it as the original ones were stained and yellowed, but I've kept them as they are original and since almost everything about the car is original, I thought I'd better keep them. I think even the rear shock absorbers are the factory ones because as of right now she still only has 70,000 miles on her. Of course there are some flaws but they're prety minor ones for a car that old. The engine still is strong, especially when I put that 101 octane racing fuel in her! Can't do that too often though as that goes for $5.25 a gallon! I plan on taking her to car shows, not so much to win prizes (although that would be nice), but its nice to let others enjoy looking at her and gives me an excuse to look at other classic cars out there. Some collectors keep their cars for a year or two and then either swap or sell them to get something different. I however plan on keeping this car and when I'm six feet under, pass it on to my kids. I've always wanted a Charger and now that I've got it, I'm going to keep it. I had wanted an R/T or R/T SE, but most of them are either clones or so high priced that this one will do me just fine. |
