| Mr John Parks,
Hello, My name is David Fowler I was in Golf 2/9 and partispated in the
recovery of the Mayaguez.
I have been one of the quietest of all who participated in the operation for
various reasons as I felt personally responsible for the death of Daniel as
I was his team leader and sent him to the other chopper in order to stay
with the other 2 in my team. reason was our chopper had 2 extra men. I was
first ordered to go to that chopper but since I was the team leader was told
would have to send at least 1 Marine to the other chopper and the rest was
history. I am bitter about the way it all came about and I should have gone
without question. Please correct the death date on the write up on Daniel as
it was 1975 not 1973 and I also believe he died on the beach when the helo
was shot down and crashed and burned on the beach. As far as I know the
remains have never been recovered. over the years I have always wanted to
make contact with his family but was afraid to do so as I felt they would
not be receptive. I have only shared this with Larry Barnett and he was
understanding. I appreciate your efforts to share and bring to light some of
the issues of this heroic operation but at the same time was a screwed up
POS operation as no one had any solid intelligence and all those lives were
lost in one day what a mess up. You know that the VA is also a POS and dont
want to give Shit to us and always feel they need to deny any benefits I
know I have tried for 32 years should have taken a Med Discharge back then.
Anyways Im getting a littled pissed again just thinking it over and will sign
off.
Again, Thank you
David Fowler
