SUDOKU was invented in by Howard Garns, a 74-year-old freelance puzzle constructor. It was first published in 1979.A very good write up on SUDOKU can be found at Wikipedia. I tells more than I wanted to know about the puzzle.
My oldest daughter, Karen, first told me about the puzzle in February of 2006. I'm always a day late and a dollar short. In this case I was about 27 years late.
Being a retired engineer with plenty of time, I decided to write a program to solve the puzzles. Since I was familiar with COMAL (an archaic Danish computer language), I wrote the program in COMAL.
I could have written it in any of the thousands of other languages if I had the program and the time and inclination to learn how to use it.
I followed the "go with what I know" theory.
As an aside....Have you ever heard of the Wil Volker "negative work theorem." It states that you should never put more lines on paper in the morning than you can erase in the afternoon, or else you would have done "negative work."
I knew Wil. Wil was a friend of mine. The last time I saw him he was building an airplane in his basement; not a toy one; a real one. I wonder if he ever finished it and if he did, how he got it out of his basement.
Back to SUDOKU.....
Click here to download my program. Once downloaded you need to click on the file to run it. It is an ".exe" file.If a screen with icons across the top appears, click on the square with the 4 arrows pointing outward to get a full screen. The rest should be obvious. Of course, it is "obvious" to me, because I wrote the program. If you have any questions, just email me.
I've kept my journal on the Internet since May of 1996. Please come visit.
GOOD LUCK
