The pristine, breathtaking Oregon coast in August.

The Great Northwest

Images of Oregon and Washington

In mid-August, we headed north to the Great Northwest, passing Mount Shasta in Northern California enroute to Oregon and Washington. Along the way, we visited Crater Lake and Bend, Ore. We went crab fishing in Skagit Bay and hiking on Chuckanut Mountain. We took a ferry to San Juan Island and explored it on a tandem bicycle. We drove back along the entire Oregon coast, soaking in the beauty of the rugged coastline and thick forests. We detoured through the towering redwoods of the Avenue of the Giants on our way back through Northern California. Here are some images from our trip.

As we approached the Oregon border on Highway 97, we looked back at the majestic, snow-capped summit of Mount Shasta. Right: We took a detour off the main highway enroute to Bend and were awed by the still, cobalt-blue water of Crater Lake.
The green-and-white Washington state ferries are a familiar sight in the waterways between Anacortes, the San Juan Islands and British Columbia. Right: Cars drive onto the ferry from San Juan Island, enroute to Anacortes.
On San Juan Island we encountered this alpaca ranch and a field with hay bales rolled up like large coins.

A pier stretches out onto Tillamook Bay in Garibaldi, Ore.

Left: the mouth of the mighty Columbia River dividing Washington and Oregon; Astoria, Ore. is on the other side of the river. Right: An old waterfront building in Bandon, Ore.
