More than 20 years experience as a newspaper editor and staff writer, including:
- Managing editor of a daily, twice-weekly and weekly newspaper.
- Skilled copy editor and page designer.
- Versatile writing background, including fiction and non-fiction, hard news, features, editorial commentary, sports and entertainment.
- Excellent PC and Mac skills, including Quark Xpress for page design.
RECENT EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
Managing editor of community newspaper in Northern California. The publication has a focus on providing quality, in-depth, thorough local news. Position reports to the publisher and manages editorial and artistic staff. Duties/accomplishments include:
- Personnel matters, department budget, news assignments, writing, editing and page design.
- Led three redesigns, in 1989, 1993 and 1999. Each redesign incorporated new styles, format and content, with a goal of creating a cleaner, more organized, contemporary-looking and reader-friendly newspaper.
- Planned, designed and edited numerous special sections, including a 48-page town almanac from scratch.
AWARDS
- Received the 1995 California Newspaper Publishers Association award for Best Editorial Comment for a piece that criticized financial mismanagement on the part of a local non-profit organization. The award cited persuasive and constructive thinking as well as significance of content.
- Received the 1993 Publishers Association award for Best Front Page based upon graphic design, writing, editing, headlines and photography.
- Put out a special issue in response to a major event receiving nationwide attention. My initiative in mobilizing the staff for this effort was recognized by the Publishers Association with its 1994 award for Best Special Issue, citing worthiness of purpose, graphic design and quality of text.
