The Alfred T. A. Torbert Memorial Project
Honoring Delaware's Civil War Hero

He became a Hero during the Civil War.

He died a Hero saving Lives at Sea.

He was honored by Soldiers, Statesmen, Kings and Presidents;

Yet, he is all but forgotten in his Home State of Delaware.

It is time for that to change.

“He was the most illustrious hero that my...State furnished to the country in the late memorable conflict...a noble example as a champion of the freedom of our great country, and of the Constitution under which we now live.”

--John W. Houston, Delaware Secretary of State, Congressman, and Judge

The Society is currently working with the Milford Museum
to create a Memorial Statue in honor of General Torbert,
to be placed in Milford, Delaware, as a Remembrance of His Life & Service.

Our goal is to dedicate the Statue on 1 July 2008,
the 175th Anniversary of General Torbert's Birthday.

Here are the details!

The 7-foot bronze statue will set on a 5-foot base, & will look very much like the above artist's composite photograph.

This artist's concept bust of General Torbert will be used as a model, with some modifications for more accuracy.

The total cost of the project will be $80,000.

Fundraising began in April, 2007 ...so far, we have raised $32,000.

The statue will be placed in the front yard of the Milford Museum.

"As a cavalry officer he displayed peculiarly brilliant qualities, his entire connection with that arm of the Service being in the highest degree creditable to himself and the Army.  Sheridan, under whose eye he fought, held him in the highest estimation...Torbert's success was the result not merely of skill and combination and high personal courage, but is a large measure the enthusiasm with which he fought and which inspiring his command made it irresistible either in attack or when assailed.”

"If our national emblem goes down, we go down with it, and of our once glorious country nothing will be left but its smoldering ruins to tell the sad tale of its former glory.  But this can never be, our eagles and the red cross ever lead us on to victory."

--General  Torbert to his troops on the occasion of relinquishing command of the New Jersey Brigade to take command of the 1st Cavalry Division
