GOURLEY FAMILY PICTURES

This is a photograph of the Gourley family of Sumner County, Tennessee. The picture was taken circa 1911 or 1912.

Some of the people are identified:

Standing in the tree is Charles Grider Bruce. The name of the child he is holding is not known.

On the front row of children, second from the left (dark hair) is Ella Lucille Bruce. The first boy on the right is Arthur Gourley and the second on the right is J. Robert "Hap" Bruce.

In the middle row, the man on the far right hand side is William ("Will") Gourley, Jr. Next to him is Alfa Gourley (wife of Arthur "Dick" Gourley).

On the back row, the woman second from the left is Merle Gourley. The woman fourth from the left is Lillie Mae Gourley Bruce. On her right is Sarah Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Gourley Hailey.

The picture was taken inside of Will Gourley's store. The location of the store is not known. Will Gourley was born in Sumner County and was the son of William Gourley and Mary Ella Ramsey Gourley. The picture was probably made ca 1915. The small boy in the picture is Will Gourley's son (name unknown). The man behind the small boy is Will Gourley. The man with his arm resting on the cash register is Charles Grider Bruce, born 1879 in Sumner County and the son of James Robert Bruce and Bettie Newton Bruce. He was the husband of Lillie M. Gourley Bruce, sister of Will Gourley. The man at the rear of the picture is unknown.

Directions: From Gallatin, take Hartsville Pike. Turn right on Steam Plant Road. Once you get to the stop sign where Steam Plant Road and Airport Road intersect, go 1/2 mile. Turn right up gravel road. Go over railroad tracks. When driveway forks, turn left. Graveyard is straight ahead. Some graves are inside a chainlink fence, others are on the back side outside the chainlink fence.
