Dad's Favorite Song Lyrics

Dad always sang these songs (in his best out-of-tune voice) especially when we were on a road trip.

3 LITTLE FISHES (words and music by Saxie Dowell)

Down in the meadow in a little bitty pool
Swam three little fishies and a mama fishie too
"Swim" said the mama fishie, "Swim if you can"
And they swam and they swam all over the dam
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
And they swam and they swam all over the dam

"Stop" said the mama fishie, "or you will get lost"
The three little fishies didn't wanna be bossed
The three little fishies went off on a spree
And they swam and they swam right out to the sea
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
And they swam and they swam right out to the sea

"Whee!" yelled the little fishies, "Here's a lot of fun
We'll swim in the sea till the day is done"
They swam and they swam, and it was a lark
Till all of a sudden they saw a shark!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Till all of a sudden they saw a shark!

"Help!" cried the little fishies, "Gee! look at all the whales!"
And quick as they could, they turned on their tails
And back to the pool in the meadow they swam
And they swam and they swam back over the dam
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
And they swam and they swam back over the dam

PACK UP YOUR TROUBLES

Pack up your troubles in your old kitbag
And smile, smile, smile
While you've a lucifer to light your fag,
Smile boys that's the style.
What's the use of worrying?
It never was worthwhile,
So pack up your troubles in your old kit bag
And smile smile smile

WRECK ON THE HIGHWAY (by Dorsey Dixon)
(we never quite knew the reason for him singing this)

Who did you say it was brother who was it fell by the way
When whiskey and blood ran together did you hear anyone pray
When I heard the crash on the highway I knew what is was from the start
I went to the scene of destruction a picture was stamped on my heart
I didn't hear nobody pray dear brother I didn't hear nobody pray
I've heard the crash on the highway but I didn't hear nobody pray

The whiskey and blood ran together mixed up with the glass where they lay
They played her hand in distraction but I didn't hear nobody pray
I wish I could change this sad story that I am now telling you
But there is no way I can change it somebody's life is now through
I didn't hear nobody pray...

COUNTRY SUNDAY SCHOOL
(he sang this song on Sunday morning while he was waking us all for Sunday School)

Samson was a mighty man
He could do anything dynamite can
Pushed on the pillars and the temple fell
And everybody in it had to run like heck.
CHORUS:
Young folks, old folks,
Everybody come,
Join the happy Sunday school
Have a lot of fun
Please park your razors and your guns at the door,
And you'll hear more stories
Than you ever heard before.

I'VE GOT TEARS IN MY EARS (FROM LYIN' ON MY BACK IN MY BED WHILE I CRY OVER YOU)
(by Harold Barlow)

I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
And the tears in my ears, they're off the
beaten track
Since you said "It's goodbye, we are through"
So if I should get water on the brain
You will know you're the one who is to blame
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.

I've got tears in my ears from lyin'on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
I've been cryin' these tears and soakin' in my sack
Since the day I found you were untrue
And if I don't get up pretty soon
I'll turn into a sleepy lagoon
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.

I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
It's been so many years, my sacroiliac
Feels as though it's been soaked through and through
Oh, you lied when you said we'd take the plunge
Now I know how it feels to be a sponge
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.
