EDWARD DARNALL

Copied verbatim ad literatum from the Charles Co., Court Records, at LaPlata, MD, the following from Book N, p. 336, 1688:

"Edward Darnoll servant to Mr. Phillip Lynds" (Lynes) "being according to act of Assembly brought hither to hand (have?) his age adjudged for Conveying to this country without Indenture it is adjudged by ye court hereupon bein' of ye said servant that he is seventeen years of age and ordered that he serve his said master or his assigns according to act in that case made and provided."

At what age Edward married and the locale of his activities prior to 1714 when he prayed for a cattle mark for his son, John, is not known to us. On 27 April 1727 Henry Darnel, acting as agent for His Lordship, Baltimore, conveyed to Edward Darnel a portion of His Lordship's Manor of Zachia, situated in Charles County, MD, for the period of three lifetimes - a period of ninety-nine years.

His will, written 1751 and probated in 1754, bequeaths to

William Thomas, 1 negro man Jack, one cow with her future increase, one feather bed and furniture, to him and his heirs.

My son Edward two cows and calves and hand mill which are mentioned to him in a bond; also one cupboard, to him and his heirs.

My son William one feather bed with strip ticking and bolster, rugg, and two pillows to him and his heirs.

My son Isaac my old gunn.

The rest of my personal estate whether moveable or immovable to be equally divided among the rest of my children named as follows: Thomas, Mary, Sarah and Elizabeth to them and their heirs.

I constitute my son Edward executor.

The surname of Edward, Sr.'s wife Sarah is established by her will, 1738, Bk 02, p. 359, Charles Co., MD.

Rachell Darnell administered the estate 16 July 1735. The names of John and Rachel were spelled Darnell, of Edward and Thomas, Darnoll. Three children were mentioned but not named in the settlement of the estate.

GERRARD DARNALL

Born 1757 in Prince George's County, MD. The Christian name also was spelled Garrett, Jarrett, Jarot, Jarrott, etc. Resided in Prince George's County until 28 June 1817, at which time he deeded a slave to his daughter "Rebecca Darcey, wife of Francis Darcey, for love and affection I bear her, as I am now on my way to Tennessee."

The 1790 Census of Prince George's County, MD, lists him with a family of one male over 16 years of age, one male under 16, four females and five slaves. Removed to Sumner County, TN in 1817. The 1820 Census of Sumner County, TN, lists Jarrott Darnol, with one son, 18 to 26 years and a wife over 45. His will, written 30 September 1822, was probated at the May term of Court, 1826. The will mentions only the son John S. as executor, and a son William; a grandson Francis, and Sally Hardy, who was to have "a decent maintenance." The daughters probably all remained in Maryland, as none was named.
