Photographed the morning after the tragic crash of the Norton crew of the 856th BS on the night of 14/15 August 1944. Reports from French Resistance forces indicate the plane hit high ground in the DZ. Only the dispatcher, John W. Gillikin, survived. He was extracted by the Maquis and cared for until he could be returned to American forces.
