NORMANDY - BRITTANY - CENTRAL EUROPE - ARDENNES - RHINELAND

tran-gif.gif (5559 bytes) Dedicated to the men of the 83rd Infantry Division who fought and died for the freedom that we enjoy today.

"...To those of you who fought in Normandy, Brittany, the Loire Valley, Luxembourg, the Hurtgen Forest, the Ardennes, and during the drives to the Rhine and over the Elbe, there is no need to relive the experiences encountered or to remind you of the inspiration set forth to us by those of our comrades who were killed or wounded.   For it is you who made this history, you who performed the heroic deeds..."

Robert C. Macon, Major General

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
FOCUS ON LIBERATION

With the 60th anniversary of D-Day in 2004 and the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in 2005, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum honors the brave men and women who risked their lives to free their fellow human beings from Nazi oppression. As the Allies advanced across Europe, they encountered and then liberated Nazi concentration camps and the inmates they found there. The Museum is providing a “Special Focus on Liberation” website so visitors may learn about the liberators' experiences during the war.

During World War II, USS LST 173 served in the European theater of operations moving critical supplies and men throughout the Mediterranean Sea. She was involved in numerous landings at the beaches of Anzio, Italy and participated in the invasion of Southern France in August and September 1944. USS LST 173 earned two battle stars for her service during World War II.
