Scoop is a loving
and super friendly cat now, but at the beginning you'd never have guessed he'd
EVER adapt to being a house cat. For the first year he lived with us he
was confined to either a bunny cage (large!) in the middle of the living room,
or to the bathroom at night. To this day he equates food, happiness
and warmth with the sound of the shower running and comes running every time I
turn it on. He's the only cat I ever met that PURRS while he eats, too. He
also comes if you whistle, but that's another story...
It took him a long
time to get over trying to attack the other cats - I still have a couple of
scars. I was starting to be afraid he'd have to live his whole live in that cage
when Pepper arrived on the scene. Scoop adopted Pepper
as HIS kitten and
the others were so annoyed about the new arrival they forgot to be afraid of
Scoop.
When first I picked
him up to bring him inside on that frigid March night he was eating from the pan
I'd left outside the window...I "scooped" him up, dish and all, and he
never missed a bite - kept right on eating all the way inside and into the
bathroom. He weighed in at abut 6 pounds then; the vet found a bee bee in his
flank and he has a congenital spine defect that makes him walk like Charlie
Chaplin, but otherwise he was healthy. The bee bee is still there
since it would have hurt him more to remove it than leave it in place, and he
still walks with a strange gait, but he weighs about 16 pounds now and is
bright-eyed, playful and loves EVERYone.
