The founder of the Applegate Family in America was Thomas Applegate who left Norfolkshire, England and settled in Holland with a group of fellow Englishman during the Puritan disorders. About 1635, he came to Massachusetts Bay Colony and on Mar. 31, 1635, he was licensed for a year by the General Court to run a ferry between Weymouth, MA and Braintree, MA.
Children of Thomas Applegate:
1. Bartholomew Applegate, born c1620; died probably in the 1690's. He was probably the oldest child. He married in Oct 1650 to Hannah Patrick of Gravesend, daughter of Capt. Daniel Patrick (killed in Stamford, Conn. by Hans Frederick ) and Anneken ( VanBeyeren ) Patrick(died Apr.1656 in Flushing,NY.(After Daniel Patrick's death, she married Tobias Feacke ). In 1650, Bartholomew completed with William Wilkins, a tide mill on Strom Kiln. Over the next 25 years, Bartholomew's name appears from time to time in the records of Gravesend(Stillwell, p.3). One of these records indicated that his wife Hannah and child were apparently abducted by the Indians and were ransomed with red cloth. On Mar. 7, 1674, Bartholomew Applegate ( Appelgadt ), Thomas Applegate ( Bartholomew's brother ), and Richard Sadler were granted permission to purchase lands from the Indians, near the Neversinks, in East Jersey. However, this was contested in April by John Bowne and Richard Hartshorne who filed notice that the grant was an infringement of their patent. The Council ordered them to prove their claim with six months, but by that time, the English had taken over the country and it was necesary to reapply for a new warrent from those in power. In 1684, Bartholomew was in Sussex Co., Delaware and was cited as delinquent in working on the hiways(Some Records of Sussex Co., Delaware. C.H.S. Turner. Philadelphia, Allan, Land, and Scott. 1909. p116). In 1685/86, the rights of Bartholomew Applegate for 200 acres of land at the Falls of the Shrewsbury were vested in Col. Lewis Morris. Later on, he was believed whaling off the coast of New Jersey.
2. Helena Applegate, born c1621; died c1652. She married (1) to Thomas Farrington, born ; died ; (2) on Aug. 15, 1646 to Louis Hulot, born ; died ; (3) to Carl Morgijn(Morgan), born ; died before 1652. She had a child by her last marriage.
3. Margaret Applegate, born ; died . She married Richard Sadler, born ; died .
4. John Applegate, born c1630; died about 1712 in Fairfield, Conn. He married Avis Goulding, who died in Fairfield, Conn. on Feb. 3, 1717, aged c80 years. In 1650, he is listed among the list of residents of Gravesend, Long Island and in 1655 as of Thompson's Long Island. In 1661, he is charged with smuggling in New Amsterdam, but that charge was not sustained later. In 1663, he is a freeholder of Oyster Bay, Long island. He bought land a house in Fairfield, Conn. about 1663 from Mary Macock; and purchased land from Samuel Forman in 1667 and John Pell in 1671. There are records of John purchasing lots in Fairfield, Conn. In 1696, Avis sold his property in Gravesend to her brother, Joseph Goulding. John Williams and Theophilus Hull of Fairfield conveyed on Jan. 18, 1704 to John Applegate one half of the long lot formerly belonging to Samuel Ward, deceased. John's will was dated Nov. 13, 1704 and mentions wife Avis, Exec'x; sons of brother, Thomas Applegate, with Avis to receive all of his estate and at her death to go to his brother, Thomas's sons. The will was probated on Jan. 24, 1712 with John Meredith of Newport, Rhode Island, one of the witnesses, swearing that John Applegate was of sound mind. An inventory had previously made on Dec. 25, 1712 and put a value of 921.07.10. On Jan. 20, 1715, John Williams conveyed land to Avis Applegate for 40 pounds, part of a debt of over 53 pounds in silver money which he owed to John Applegate, dec'd. Avis on Feb. 2, 1716, "for the love and respect which I bear unto John Williams of Fairfield and to his children", reconveyed the house and lot to him and his children, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Abiah, and Mary.(History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield). Following, Avis' death, her estate was administered by her nephew, Joseph Applegate. Samuel Barlow and Moses Ward made an inventory of the estate on Feb. 5, 1716/17 and reported, "nothing left after paying debts". On May 1, 1716/17, the Court of Probate held in Fairfield, CN ruled that the "clear estate of John Applegate was 116.19.1 pounds after allowance of 5 pounds to Joseph Applegate for "for his work of Administration" and court costs of 0.12.0. and the court authorized Joseph Applegate to distribute the estate in equal portions to the six sons of John's brother, Thomas. John and Avis apparently had no children.
5. Thomas Applegate, born c1632; died 1699. He married (1)_______, born ; died ; (2) to Joanna Gibbons, born ; died after 1699, daughter of Richard Gibbons, who was one of the twelve patentees of Monmouth Co., NJ. He apparently moved to New Jersey sometime in the 1660's as his cattle mark was recorded in the town book of Middletown on Jan. 4, 1668. On Mar. 8, 1674, Thomas petitioned along with his brother, Bartholomew for land in the Neversinks. On Apr. 21, 1676, John Fenwick gave a deed to Thomas Applegate, weaver, of New Shrewsberry, NJ for 600 acres in Fenwick's Colony. There was a second deed on Sept. 20, 1677 to Thomas Applegate of the Falls in New Shrewsberry in NJ, weaver, of 480 acres in the allotment of Cohanzick along the Marsh, part of Edward Boarnes 2000 acres. On Oct. 19, 1677, he secured by a quit-claim deed, two hundred and forty acres of upland and meadow in Shrewsbury Twp., Monmouth Co., NJ. There are records that he served on jury duty in Middlesex Co., NJ. On Feb. 14, 1679, Thomas Applegate along with 12 others obtained a charter to hunt whales. He made his will on Feb. 1, 1698 and it was proved on Mar. 29, 1699; his death must have occured between these dates, probably in Feb. 1699. His wife, Joanna and her father, Richard Gibbons, were the executors of his estate.

He apparently owned a lot in Middletown, NJ. The following deed is recorded: "On Feb. 5, 1702/3 to Thomas Applegate, 590 acres on the north side of Chohansey Creek between Pine Marsh and Nicholas Demvres land in Salem Co., NJ. John Adams and William Wait, witnesses". Thomas and his mother sold the 600 acres that his father, Thomas Jr., had purchased from John Fenwick on Nov. 20, 1703 to Obediah Holmes of Salem Co., NJ. 5A4C1F2. Andrew Jackson Applegate, born Aug. 27, 1857 at Prospect Plains, NJ; killed at a railroad crossing on Sept. 12, 1921. He married at Long Branch, NJ on Nov. 1(21), 1878 to Susan C. Brehm, b. 1862, d. 1922, of Westchester, NY; born 1862; died , daughter of ______ and Ellen Brehm, born 1819 in Ireland; died Oct. 20, 1902. Ellen is buried next to Susan Brehem's brother William H. Brehem, b. June 5, 1852, d. Apr. 17, 1917. William Brehem married Mary Hennessey, b. Aug. 19, 1871, d. Jan. 3, 1944. Susan inherited their house in Seabright, NJ from her mother (Monmouth Co. deeds; 1904, Book 386, p 58), who purchased the property on Apr. 6, 1883. The house remains in the family, shared be several descendents of Andrew and Susan Applegate. Andrew and Susan are buried adjacent to thier daughter Charlotte and son-in-law John Robertson at the Methodist Cemetery on Wall St. in West Long Branch, NJ.
Andrew was a sailing captain and was advisor to Capt. Thomas Lipton's yacht, Shamrock. The NY Times ran several articles about his contribution to the 1920 America's Cup race. Andrew was a fisherman and operated a marine supply and tackle shop from the first floor of his house. Presently, the first floor of the house is used as a tackle shop and cafe. One of his most beloved possessions was his yacht, Charlotte, kept on the Shrewsbury River, across from his house. It appears that he was deep in thought when he crossed the railroad tracks in front of his house and was struck by the train from NY. Coincidentally, his daughter Charlotte had just gotten off the train at the station next to the house before the train struck him. Normally, the train made its last stop at Seabright and turned around, but on this trip the train continued on to Long Branch and Asbury Park. Andrew was a Methodist (picture of United Methodist Church where Andrew worshipped and helped to build) and a Democrat in politics. Go to Andrews parents (5A4C1F). |

John Applegate, known as Jack, was a meat hunter for black duck in that hey-day and was very well known for his decoys. He was also a fisherman and owned the party boat "Cherokee", which sailed from Anglesea, NJ (all day fare was $1.25!). John appears in the Cape May County phone directory during 1914-1952.
