Pups 21 July '04

Katie's pups are 3 weeks old tonight. They are becoming much more coordinated and interactive. They wrestle with each other, bark and whine and have even led group howls with the big dogs on several occasions. The individual personalities of the pups are emerging, even though they are still pretty difficult to identify without the help of color coding! Here are some photos taken over the past few days.

Katie is still being avery good mom. She now takes more breaks from staying in the whelping box but hurries back to feed them regularly and keep them clean.

While Katie is taking a breather, Grandma Raqui (below, top) and Aunt Tatla (below, bottom) pitch in to keep the pups company

Even Tucker is curious enough to check on the pups. Carol is very interested in meeting her Uncle Tucker (below).

Last weekend, we began supplementing their regular diet of Katie's milk with some rice cereal puppy "gruel". At first the pups preferred to wear their dinner and eat it off each others fur, but now almost all have learned to eat directly out of the bowl. It's a good thing because their teeth are starting to break through and before long Katie will get tired of nursing the "piranha" pups!

There is a lot more action in the whelping box now as the pups motor around wrestling with each other...

...and pretty soon no box will be large enough to keep these pups contained!

But right now the pups are happy to cuddle up and sleep in their comfy box and dream about future adventures.
