ALCS (Minnesota vs.
Baltimore)
Game 1 – Perry vs. Cuellar
Baltimore took a 1-0 lead on a
Sacrifice Fly by Dave Johnson. The Twins took the lead in the 6th inning on a triple
by Cardenas with runners on 1st and 2nd. In the ninth, after a rare play Strike
Out - Passed Ball allowing Frank Robinson to reach first base and a walk
to Boog Powell, Perranoski was brought to shut the Orioles down. Unfortunately,
Brooks Robinson didn't follow the script as he deposited a pitch over the
centerfield wall for a 3 run dinger and the win, 4-3. Cuellar goes 8 innings
and Leonhard gets the win in the 9th. Baltimore leads
series 1-0
Game 2 – Boswell vs. McNally
The Twins scored quickly on an error by Brooks Robinson and a
double by Oliva but that was the only lead the Twins would hold as the O's
scored on RBI singles by Powell and Johnson. Boswell was chased in the 5th
inning as the Orioles sealed the game with 5 runs including a 3 run homer by
Johnson and a solo dinger by Elrod Hendricks. McNally goes 7 innings and gets
the win. 9-3. Baltimore leads series 2-0
Game 3 – Kaat vs. Palmer
This was a heartbreaker as the
Orioles eliminate the Twins in 11 innings. With the score 6-5 Minnesota going
into the top of the 8th inning,
Perranoski comes in and gives up a leadoff homerun to Boog Powell to tie
the game, 6-6. With Tom Hall pitching in the 11th for Minnesota gets
PH, Motton on a groundout. He then walks Buford to put the tying run on base.
Then Paul Blair doubles to center to drive in Buford to give the O’s the lead,
7-6. Against Hardin in the bottom of the 11th, Cardenas leadoffs
with a walk, Mitterwald foul outs out to Etchebarren for the first out. Allison
singles to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Hardin then got
Renick to flyout and Tovar to groundout to end the game and series, 7-6. Baltimore wins series 3-0
NLCS (New York vs.
Atlanta)
Game 1 – Seaver vs. Niekro
The Mets start off with 3 runs in
the top of the first on a single by Boswell, a walk by Cleon Jones and a three
run homer by Art Shamsky. Carty homered off of Seaver in the second to make the
score 3-1. The teams exchanged homeruns in the 7th, one by Grote and
one by Cepeda as the Mets win 4-2. New York leads
series 1-0
Game 2 – Koosman vs. Reed
Reed gives up 8 hits but holds the
Mets to 1 run on a triple by Agee in the 5th. The Braves score 3
runs courtesy of a wild pitch, 2 walks and some sloppy play to defeat the Mets,
3-1. Series Tied 1-1
Game 3 – Gentry vs. Jarvis
The Mets again jump out to a 3 run
lead in the 1st inning on an RBI single by Cleon Jones and a 2 run
dinger by Art Shamsky. The Mets extend their lead to 4-0 on a solo shot by
Tommie Agee in the 5th. In the 7th, Clete Boyer came up
with runners on 1st and 2nd and hit a 3 run homer that
the wind surely got a hold of (Replay Ball Park Effects). Tug McGraw came in to slam the door on
the Braves, 4-3. New York leads series 2-1
Game 4 – Seaver vs. Niekro
This one was ALL Braves. Millan
went 4 for 5 with a homerun and Alou and Cepeda both hit 2 run homers to give
the Braves an easy win, 7-0. Series tied 2-2
Game 5 – Koosman vs. Reed
The game goes scoreless through 7
innings but the Mets did their damage in the 8th on a 2 run dinger
by Tommie Agee to drive in Jerry Koosman who was pitching a gem. In the 8th
inning, the Braves had runners on 1st and 2nd when McGraw
came up to again, slam the door. Didier led off the 9th inning with
a double but McGraw got Jackson, Gonzalez and Alou to give the Mets the win,
2-0. New York wins series 3-2
1969 World Series (New
York vs. Baltimore)
Game 1 – Seaver vs. Cuellar
The Mets start off hitting as
Tommie Agee opens with a triple to center. Boswell then singles to drive in
Agee to give the Mets the lead, 1-0. The lead didn’t last long. Seaver got the
first 2 batters but gave up a single to Frank Robinson and a double to Boog
Powell for their first run. Then Brooks Robinson singled to centerfield but
Agee nailed Powell at home to stop the bleeding. In the 3rd inning
Bud Harrelson led off with a single and was sacrificed to 2nd by
Seaver. Tommie Agee Agee then hit a 2 run homer to give the Mets a 3-1 lead.
There the score stayed until the bottom of the 8th inning. Seaver
got Blair to line to Shamsky in right. Seaver then surrendered back-to-back
homeruns to Frank Robinson and Boog Powell to tie the score, 3-3. The score
stayed 3-3 until the 16th. The Cuellar and the Orioles relief
pitching were amazing, giving up only 2 hits, harmless singles, from the 4th
through through the 16th inning. With Koonce on the mound, the Mets
blew it. First, Koonce hit Buford who was then caught stealing. Blair singled
and then Frank Robinson drove him in with a double. Orioles win 4-3 in 16
innings. Baltimore leads series 1-0
Game 2 – Koosman vs. McNally
This one was a pitching
dual through 7 innings. The Orioles finally broke the tie with a couple of Ball
Park singles (that could have been homeruns) and a Sac Fly by Mark Belanger.
DiLauro took over for Koosman after he was removed for a pinch hitter in the
top of the 8th. Buford was retired on a lineout but Blair walked and Frank
Robinson singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Then
DiLauro gave up a huge blast to Boog Powell to give the Orioles to ice the win,
4-0. Baltimore leads
series 2-0
Game 3 – Gentry vs. Palmer
The Mets get out of the
shoot early with doubles by Agee and Boswell, a walk to Cleon Jones, a single
by Shamsky and a Sac Fly by Garrett for a 2-0 lead. In the 2nd, with
the bases loaded the mets get another run on a fielder’s choice by Cleon Jones
to increase the lead to 3-0. In the 4th, Blair led off with a homerun, Frank Robinson singled, Powell
doubled, Brooks Robinson was intentionally walked and Dave Johnson doubled as
the Orioles to tie the score, 3-3. The
O’s chased Gentry in the 5th as Brooks Robinson doubled in 2 runs.
The O’s added one more in the 7th to make the score 6-3. The Mets
added one of their own in the 7th but that’s as far as they would
get. Orioles win 6-4. Baltimore leads series 3-0
Game 4 – Seaver vs. Cuellar
The O’s take an early
lead on a homer by Powell in the 2nd inning. The Mets retaliated in
the 2nd with a run of their own to tie the score, 1-1. The Mets just
couldn’t get anything going. The Orioles scored a runs in the 4th, 5th
and 9th as the Orioles win the series. The Mets really had no chance
in the series. Baltimore
wins series 4-0
Boog Powell is the 1969
World Series MVP going 8 for 20 with 2 doubles, 3 homeruns and 7 RBIs.
