1989 World Series (Oakland
vs. San Francisco)
Game 1 – Stewart vs. Reuschel
The Giants got on the board first.
Brett Butler led off with a single and was doubled in by Will Clark. Kevin Mitchell
then homered to give the Giants a 3-0 lead. The Giants scored another run in
the 4th, chasing Dave Stewart. The Giants also scored runs in the 5th
and 7th. In the 8th, Rickey Henderson was walked, stole
second and was driven in on a deep blast by Jose Canseco. It was too late
however as the Giants win 6-2. Rick Reuschel pitched a complete game four
hitter and Kevin Mitchell went 4 for 4 with a double, a homerun and 3
RBIs. San
Francisco leads series 1-0
Game 2 – Welch vs. Robinson
The A’s were looking to
retaliate for their Game 1 loss by jumping on the board first. Rickey Henderson
doubled to lead off and was driven in by a Jose Canseco single. Dave Henderson
capped the A’s rally with a 2 run homer to give the A’s the 3-0 lead. The lead
would be short lived. The Giants tied the score with the benefit of three
singles and two Giants errors. The game stayed tied 3-3 until the bottom of the
8th inning when Todd Burns, who came in to relieve Bob Welch, gave
up a solo shot to Matt Williams to give the Giants the 4-3 win. Robinson gets
the win and Bedrosian gets the save. San Francisco leads series 2-0
Game 3 – Davis vs. Garrelts
Matt Williams homered
in the 2nd and 4th innings to give the Giants a 2-0 lead.
Ernie Riles drove in Kevin Mitchell in the 7th inning, giving the
Giants a 3-0 lead. In the 6th, Jose Canseco drove in Rickey
Henderson with a Sac Fly, making the score 3-1. The A’s just could not get
anything going, managing only 5 harmless singles. Matt Williams went 4 for 4
with 2 HRs, 1 2B and 2 RBIs. Garrelts goes 7.1 innings for the win. Lefferts
picked up the save. San
Francisco leads series 3-0
Game 4 – Moore vs. Reuschel
The A’s scored two runs
off of Rick Reuschel in the 2nd on hits by Carney Lansford and Walt
Weiss. In the 5th inning, Rickey Henderson walked and Jose Canseco
homered giving the A’s a 4-0 lead. The Giants scraped together a run in the 8th
inning but lose 4-1. Every hitter in the A’s lineup had one hit. San Francisco lead 3-1.
Game 5 – Stewart vs. Robinson
The A’s had a 1-0 lead
going into the 5th inning until the Giants put up 5 runs and chased
both Stewart and Curt Young, who came in with the bases loaded and gave up a
base clearing double. The Giants scored a run in the 6th and added
another in the 7th with a Kevin Mitchell homerun. Ron Hassey drove
in a run for the A’s but they fell short and the Giants win, 7-2. Robinson went
8.2 innings and won despite giving up 8 hits and 7 walks. Terry Kennedy, Ernest
Riles and Kevin Mitchell all went 2 for 4 and Mitchell had 4 RBIs. San Francisco wins series 4-1.
Kevin Mitchell and Matt
Williams are co-MVPs for the 1989 World Series. Honorable mention goes to Don
Robinson for his 2 wins in 16.2 innings.
