ORIGINS:

The surname Finley derives from the Gael (Scots), a form of Gaelic with Celtic origins. Some English variations are,

Finlay, Findlay, Findley, Finlayson, and Finleyson.

The surname is the anglicized version of the old Gaelic name "Fionnlaigh", which also has numerous variations.

Fhionnlaidh, Fionnlaigh, Fenlaigh, Fendleoch, and Fionnla.

The name has a two-fold meaning, "Fionn" (Fair) and "Laigh" (Warrior)). "Fair-Warrior".

Farquhar, Ferchard, and Farquharson  are Scottish names that sometimes used in place of Finley.

The Clan Finley descend from an ancient tribe (clan) who's past is linked with that history of Scotland and Ireland.

Most of it's history is lost in the mist of antiquity, but what is known is that our ancestors survived through times of struggle and many would live and die by the sword.

The Finley's were like other descendants of the highlands of Scotland. They were clannish, self-reliant, and had a love of liberty. They had the natural ability to survive when blazing the trails of their new world, America. They would become loyal to their new home and would join General Washington in the fight for American independence.
