James Harrison Finley

1837 - 1891


James Harrison Finley was born in McNairy Co., Tennessee in 1837, the son of Robert Finley and wife Dorcas Splane. In mid-1850 he would move with his parents to Alcorn Co., Mississippi near Corinth. In 1862, James would join the 32nd Mississippi Regiment of the Confederate Army as a private and be assigned as a sharpshooter. He would see action at the Battle of Shilou and Corinth. He would be wounded at the latter and walk with a limp for life. In 1864 he would be captured at Stone River, Tennessee  and spend the rest of the war as a POW. After the war, James would return to the Corinth area as a farmer. In 1872, he would marry Sarah Ellen Web, born in 1849, the daughter of Hap & Mary Web of Corinth. James would live out his life near Corinth and die there in 1891. He is buried in the Walnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, near Corinth. In 1907, Sarah Ellen would move with her family to Ward, Arkansas and die there in 1932. She is buried in the Grissard Cemetery at Elpaso, Arkansas. They would have seven children.
