Remembering Walter E. Kincey

A Scholarship In His Memory

Will Live Forever

Walter E. Kincey Memorial Scholarship

Walter E. Kincey, was known throughout his short life for a lot of excellent qualities. But if you ask friends and family what tops the list, they answer without hesitation and speak of his obedience to the will of God and his honesty and sternness in what he believed. They will also speak of his passion to always lending a hand to family and friends. Most importantly, they will speak of his love and dedication to his wife and children.

Now, through the generosity of his children, family members, and friends, one of his greatest passions has come together with the creation of the Walter E. Kincey Scholarship.
The Walter E. Kincey Memorial Scholarship will enable African American high school seniors to attend the University of South Alabama where his eldest daughter Sundra got her start. It is meant to cement Walter’s legacy by providing an educational experience that is rare for students of small rural communities, particularly first-generation college students. The first Walter E. Kincey Memorial Scholarship will be awarded in 2007. Eventually, we hope to expand our program so that students may use the scholarship to enroll at an institution of their choice.

While Walter himself never attended college, he provided the opportunity for his children to do so. Growing up, he always placed a strong value on education for all of his children. W
hile enrolled at USA, Walter, his wife, and siblings spent a lot of time coming to visiting Sundra in Mobile. The day of graduation was one to remember for all of them as this was a celebration for the first person in their family to graduate from college. As a result of this milestone in their life, Walter's family felt very strongly as they tried to move forward that they wanted to remember their father in a way that would live forever and also help other people accomplish their goals in life.

In 2003, his children, particularly his grandchildren, struggled to deal with the sudden death of our father. Thinking back on that time, we wanted to find a positive way to memorialize him. Three years later, we are able to with the creation of The Walter E. Kincey Scholarship, designed for minority students.

As we talked, we realized that the one thing we had in common was the value placed on education in our family and realizing that this opportunity is rare for individuals from our small rural community. This scholarship seems to be the most appropriate way to honor our Dad. Other people having a chance for a college education and a successful future would have made our father extremely proud.

Our hope is that recipients of the scholarships, who are going to be the future leaders in this society, will see this as an opportunity and resource to help them achieve success in life and then use that knowledge to mentor other young people to do the same. We are asking for your sincere donations to keep this scholarship going and in memory of Walter E. Kincey.

Sincerely,

Sundra D. Kincey, Eldest Daughter
