Co-proprietor with Roger Williams, the Colonial founder of Rhode Island, in Williams' Providence Plantations. Maturin appears first on record among these proprietors in 1646. He subscribed his own name Mathurin Bellow. His descendants commonly resolved it into Maturin Ballou.

Married c1647-49 in Providence, RI, to Hannah PIKE;
born 1626 in Devonshire, England;
daughter of Robert PIKE born 1601 & Catherine _____;
died 27-Oct-1707 in Providence, RI, at the age of 81.

Children of Maturin & Hannah:

1. John Ballou, born c1650;
2. James Ballou, born c1652;
3. Peter Ballou, born c1654;
4. Hannah Ballou, born c1656; died unmarried "in advanced maidenhood".
5. Nathaniel Ballou, born c1658; died in early manhood.
6. Samuel Ballou, born c1660; drowned 10-Jun-1669.
