Tuttle &
Tuthill Reprints of this boook are now available from the Higginson Book Company of Salem, MA. The original volume was not copyrighted, as Alva Tuttle wanted to put the data into the public record. Much of his data has been reviewed, edited, and reformatted by Gwen Campbell of Oregon, and is available as a collection of Family Record Sheets in several volumes from Solo Press of Keno, OR. APOLOGY: "This book is, in many ways, far from the publication, both in content and appearance, which I have visualized in my mind during the years I have been assembling the data. Had I published ALL the data in my files in the manner I dreamed of, this would rival the Encyclopedia Brittanica in size and far exceed it in unit cost, because unit cost decreases as the number printed increases and the Brittanica is not printed in editions less than 1000 in quantity. I have been forced to adopt every expedient I could devise to decrease the space needed to present the data herein. Most of these expedients have been explained on pages 1 to 4 and 7, but a few are discussed below. Doubtless some readers will object to one or another, or perhaps all, of these space and cost saving expedients. Many will dislike the small type closely crowded on large pages, but it is far more legible than the faded old handwritten records from which I and many of my contributors have extracted much of the data. Others, especially librarians, will want a much more sturdy binding. Many will detest the many special abbreviations and the brief method of statement used. Many will complain because I have omitted most all of the long lines of female line descendants which they have sent me. I myself regret especially the elimination of practically all biographical data and of many interesting anecdotes and quaint statements found in old records. I apologize for all of these things, as well as others not mentioned here. I regret them all but they were necessary because this has been published 'on a shoestring'. At this writing when little but the binding remains to be done, I am still faced with a deficit of considerable magnitude unless and until I can sell the very limited number of extra copies I can afford to have made. Yes I apologize, although I do not feel that the fault is mine! It lies with the many thousands of living descendants who must have seen one of my circulars or heard about my project at one time or another. If [only] 5% of them had seen fit to make an advance deposit subscription for one copy, many of these things could have been avoided." Alva
