So you think Oranges are only for eating?? Well, I do too. Mitsu apparently didn’t think so. First, find a set of D50/Mighty Max gauges (1983-1986), which are plentiful at junkyards. There may be another match; however, I’m originally a D50 guy so I have tons of extra D50 stuff. Take off the needles carefully, as well as the gauge and gauge lighting plate. The needles are auto set at 0MPH so when you reinstall, set them at 0MPH. My man handling just pushed the needle a bit low in the picture, but the gauge is STILL set at 0MPH, it CAN'T go any lower due to a stopper on the needle shaft. Anyway... that was the easiest part... Disassemble the D50 gauge. Those gears you see are for the stupid EGR light… ignore them. Note: break the screws loose with pliers and follow up with a #2 Phillips… or you WILL strip them… and then you’ll be screwed, no pun intended.
The Odometer numbers will come off first, and then the trip numbers. Disassemble the Starion gauge in the same fashion. Note(yes, again): break the screws loose with pliers and follow up with a #2 Phillips… or you WILL strip them… and then you’ll be screwed, no pun intended.
Time to do some cutting… but first… SAFETY. You are doing this mod because you don’t want to see that ugly orange anymore, right?? Well… not wearing safety goggles is a way to go about it. I found these stylish “safety” shades on the tennis courts, so now I can cut in STYLE. Mmm yeah… that’s how we do it. Cut here, so you can take out the ugliness. Why did Mitsu do it differently on the Starion gauges?? Probably because they knew I was going to do this mod, and wanted to stop me… or at least slow me down. Do the world a favor. Don’t put away that Dremel yet. Notch/Cut this area out, it will match the D50’s notch. Make a similar notch on the opposite side. This is how it SHOULD look, as long as you don’t go crazy with the Dremel. Might need some cleaning… Mitsu wanted to make it even more harder, the D50 reset stalk is too short, and too fat to work in the Starion cluster, it’s even a few millimeters too high. Have no fear, Komeuppance is here for you. Take the reset stalk off easily, here. And switch-er-roo. Now install the awesome white Trip number assembly onto the Starion speedo. Put these two screws in for right now, the other side will need the Odometer numbers before you can screw it down. I forgot to install this plastic piece by the time I was done, which holds the positive wire, so I’m telling you now. (I also forgot to mention it comes off with the trip assembly.) Time to install the Odometer numbers. Two screws here, and one on the other side which is not shown. Once in place, you can adjust the mileage of the car to the original. Forgot the actual mileage since you smashed the orange numbers?? Do as I did and go to zero. Remove this copper clip. Slide the thing circled in yellow to the left as far as it’ll go. You can now turn the numbers if you have enough gap, shown in the green circle. Once you’re satisfied with your debauchery, push everything back together, line up the holder thingys, and reinstall the copper clip. You know the drill now, put it all back together… and then send me some beer money. TIME TO EAT!!
