District News

The East Grand Rapids Public Schools, like virtually every other district in the state of Michigan, is under significant operating budget pressure due to the difficult state economy. School officials have been working very hard the last few months to develop a recommended budget for 2009-10 that provides an outstanding educational program for our students despite the lack of funds available. Unfortunately, the recommended budget does include a considerable amount of budget reductions for 2009-10 The link below will take you to the business office page of the district's website, where further information about the district's budget difficulties, along with the recommended budget reductions, are provided in detail.

Habitat for Humanity

We are excited to announce that the East Grand Rapids Public Schools staff and Habitat for Humanity of Kent County will partner to build a home for a local Kent County family in need. Information was shared during building open houses and please be alert for additional information throughout the school year. We are pleased that many staff, students and parents have already signed up to volunteer in three key areas: fund raising, building (14 years old and older) and hospitality.

Habitat for Humanity requires a commitment from the group of 2,400 hours of volunteer service and $70,000.00. The committee intends to raise funds for the project through a silent auction, donations from each school and community businesses, and other activities. Staff in each of the buildings will become active in raising money, deciding how to participate without taking away from fund raising activities that support student programs. A link on our web site will offer more information on the project or feel free to contact the High School representatives Mark Webb (mwebb@egrps.org), Caroline Cannon (ccannon@egrps.org) or Sara Edleman (sedleman@egrps.org) for additional information.
