The A. James Dyess Chapter 425 meets monthly, usually at the Communications Workers of America Hall on Leigh Street in Martinez, Ga.. Members are notified by phone of time and location, as this is sometimes in conjunction with other chapter activities. In December, the meeting is combined with a holiday dinner party and the date and location varies.
The chapter is named for Col. A. James Dyess, U. S. Marines, a native of Augusta, Ga. Col. Dyess was killed in action in WWII. He is the only recipient of both the Medal of Honor (military) and the Carnegie Lifesaving Medal (civilian), awarded for valor. There is a park in the downtown Augusta area, and a highway near Fort Gordon, named in his honor.
