Daniel alone again as they travel with that soulful "Jack?.... Guys?"
Jack: Does it say colonel anywhere on my uniform?
Anyone have a clue what Daniel was doing while Jack was talking with Sam and the the others before they went off after Jonas? He had some tool with him and was doing something with the ground, but I can't figure out what! Was he burying something? I had thought he was getting a sample of soil but no idea why he would do that in this instance. Any ideas?
Daniel and Sam walking together, conversing so freely; the way the camera lands on Jack at the word lunatic .... how Daniel looks back at Jack when talking about SF guys and how the crazier they are, the more extreme the situations they get put into.
| Daniel: What did you see in him? Sam: I don't know. I guess I've always had a soft spot for the lunatic fringe. He was charming. Daniel: That's good; charming is good. |
| Daniel: We should have stopped her. Teal'c: We would have failed. |
Daniel: He's a friend.... See.... [to Teal'c] Smile, look friendly.Jack: You're going to have to work on that.
And simply this most wonderful, prophetic sounding (re: season 6) line, spoken by Daniel to Jamal: "Jonas is bad!"
Simply how Daniel runs the show alot; convinces the people about the shield.
Jamal: The world outside the caves is very big, yes?
Daniel: Yeah, it's bigger than you can imagine. [wonderful smile]

I wonder --- any good practical jokes done while Michael (as Daniel) dials home? For some reason, it seems like a good prop for any willing practical jokester!
And how about that look in this photo to the right? ...such a look of wonder!

I love the Jack and Sara love story; it has such a tragic ending, though, and there's still much torment to be dealt with. I enjoy how the energy being as Jack is able to say what the real Jack hasn't been able to. My perception is that when Jack does retire from the airforce and the SGC for real, he'll return to Sara, having taken what he's learned from his experiences and friends like Daniel with him, finally able to accept, forgive, and move forward!
Jack's box of memories -- the photos ... the wedding ring; strange that he would keep it at the SGC, though!
Sam: I didn't even know he was married.
Daniel: Oh, he isn't; he was, but they separated after his son died.
[the only part that bothered me about this dialogue and that which followed is that Daniel so freely told this information to Sam; I would have thought Daniel would have respected Jack's privacy a tad more; if Jack wanted Sam to know all about this, he would have told her himself; only proves our Daniel isn't perfect -- close, but not quite :}]

Daniel: He doesn't really tell you much until he gets to know you.
Teal'c watching tv, and seeing the news reports, and how he puts his hand to his head when watching an MTV-like music video (by the way, Teal'c, I agree!)
Teal'c: Your world is a strange place.
Daniel: [wondering where that statement came from] So yours.
Teal'c: You received permission for me to fire my staff weapon in the gateroom?
Sam: Oh yeah.
Daniel: Absolutely. [lol - didn't know Sam and Daniel could lie so well]
Daniel: Hey, did you see this thing inside of it; I didn't know that was there before; [totally flustered] whoa -- captain doctor, Teal'c .... it was me; it was me.
Sam: [not sure whether to laugh or have him committed] Are you okay?
Daniel: Look!
Jack: Hey what are you guys doing leaving without me? What's with all the ordinance?
Crystal Energy Being: You cannot change what happened that day. Charlie is still there, inside you.
Take care of yourself, Jack.

Daniel asking Teal'c if anything like this had happened before; Teal'c responding the goa'uld used a homing device to find the stargate; and Daniel speeding up his pace to ask Jack and Sam, "Do we have a homing device?"
Jack: That's not our mission. Daniel: Just ... forget our mission. Now, he's the only one who knows where Sha're and Skaara are. We may not get another chance like this.

lol ... Little Rambo wants to do battle! It's so unDaniel-like and yet it comes out on occasion in shows such as this one!
Daniel: I felt that blast kill me. I mean I thought ... I thought we were dead; weren't we dead? Sam: Yeah. Daniel: Okay, well I thought heaven would be a little more upscale. Sam: Oh, I don't think this is heaven. Daniel: Jack .... Jack. Jack: What? [startled] Daniel: [softly] It's okay. Jack: What the hell was that? Daniel: It's okay. [so comfortingly] Jack: Wasn't I just ... Sam: Killed? Jack: Killed as in... Sam: Dead. Jack: Dead. Sam: Yeah, we know; we saw it happen; same thing happened to us. Jack: This is a surprise then.
Jack: Of what? Daniel: I have no idea.
Sam: As in stargate? Lya: Yes, you will go. Jack: Well, it's not quite that simple .. you helped us, you saved us. Anteaus: Yes. Jack: How? Anteaus: Our ways. Daniel: We're from a race of people that want to learn about your ways, your medicines. Anteaus: No; you will go. Jack: Right. We'll go.
Anteaus: I told you the same; the very young do not always do what they are told.

Apophis: Fool, I will kill you.Jack: Again?
Jack: Yes. Anteaus: Why? Teal'c: It is our way that the strong to defend the weak. Jack: We're afraid for you. Anteaus: Before you go, O'Neill, there is something I would have you see. [he reveals the hidden city] Anteaus: Fear not. Maybe one day you will learn that your way is not the only way. Jack: Why didn't he tell us about this before? Daniel: I think in their way they did. Teal'c: It appears they possess a form of technology far greater than that of the goa'uld. Sam: They look so helpless. Daniel: And now they are going to bury the stargate and we can never come back; we should have listened. Jack: The very young do not always do what they are told. ...a little something the Nox told me one time; something worth taking home.

Sam: What? Don't look at me, I don't know what to do.
Sam: How many babies have you delivered?
Daniel: Ah, two, counting today.
Jack pacing --he's not good at this stuff.
Jack: You never cease to amaze me with all your talents.
Daniel: Thank you.
Daniel: Look at these people; guess they've never heard the word unattractive.
Jack: Do things feel a little off here?
Daniel: Are you crazy; it's a paradise.
Jack: Yeah, sure; have an apple; what could happen.
Kynthia: It is only for you.
Daniel: It is only for you.
Daniel: A hundred days celebration? ...guess we should pace ourselves.
Daniel and Teal'c in the temple:
Daniel: Why didn't you tell me that before?
Teal'c: You never before inquired.
Jack: Go on out there, take a walk, see what's there.
Jack: I'm a military man, a warrior, that's my life ... to which my ex-wife will attest.
Kynthia: You love her still ... and now because of me, you will never see her again.
Daniel: Sir, we cannot just leave him there.

Two of my favorite moments, simply for their concepts. Don't ask me why, but I love Daniel exiting the spot where the birth occurred. Perhaps Michael shortcutted the wall by accident, but Daniel seemed to bump into the wall on the way out, and it's ultra cute, and so Daniel! Below, I love how all the books are spread out, something Daniel does when translating and researching. There's something about that look that I love, too!
|
The opening expressions during the conference room scene are great. Teal'c, Hammond, and Jack are in that "there he goes again mode" and only Sam has that natural curiosity and is all ears!

Jack: Daniel, you're on.
Sam: I don't want to hear that.
Kendra: Your wife? Daniel: I have to know if there is any hope. Kendra: It was very painful, like needles stabbing inside the head; the beast will do anything to stay in control; it's a battle of wills; many give up. Daniel: Well Sha're wasn't trained in a temple like you, but she had a spirit; she was a fighter. Kendra: You loved her very much. Daniel: I still do. I dream about her. It's as if some part of her is reaching out to me; or maybe that's just wishful thinking. Kendra: No, you still are connected. If you find her and bring her here, I believe there is hope. Daniel: Thank you.
|

Sam: Daniel, your belief that Kendra can somehow help bring Sha're back to you, it doesn't make it true and it certainly doesn't make her reliable.Daniel: Haven't you ever had a feeling that made absolutely no logical sense and it turned out to be right?
Daniel: The hammer works. Do you know what this means?
Jack: It's the only way out of here, Daniel.
Daniel: ...What this thing can do for Sha're and Skaara?
Jack: Teal'c's here now.
Teal'c: And here I will remain. I was with those who took the ones you love.
Jack: No, you're part of this family now; we're not leaving you behind.
Jack: This thing won't work in here, try from out there. [handing Daniel the staff weapon]
Jack: [quietly, as if rooting Daniel on by sheer will power] C'mon.
[Daniel fires, lowering his head, contemplating what has just occurred]
Sam: Did it work?
Jack: There's one way to find out.
Teal'c: [as Daniel hands him the staff weapon] Thank you, Daniel Jackson.
Daniel: Well at least we know it can be done, right.
The fact that Daniel, though having lived through this torment, moves on, and in true form, gets excited about giving Gairwyn the new gift of friendship from Earth to those in other worlds -- the box created by the Sagan Institute which is "all about who we are".

There is a super fan fic that picks up at the end of this episode, and focuses on Jack's choice to have Daniel destroy the hammer, when he could have easily done it himself. Be sure to read "Testing the Bounds" by Gershwhen for an interesting take on what might have been discussed at the end of this very long day. Here's a teaser!
Finally Daniel's eyes raised to his. Jack almost stepped back in shock. The pain that he had expected was there, but a stronger, unexpected emotion showed too: anger. And he could feel it directed at him.
"Look, Daniel, I really think you could use some company right now. I know this was - "
"Don't say hard Jack, please. Today was hell and you made it worse. Now if I've passed your little test, I'd like to go."
"Daniel? Look I know today was hard, maybe a bit of kicking back would help. I'd be happy to listen - "
