Stargate SG-1, My Latest Addiction

Welcome to page 3 of my Stargate SG-1 tribute. If you have any artwork or scans you would like to share that would be appropriate for this page, please let me know! Likewise, for any short, following canon fanfics that add to the episodes included.

Deciding what parts of "The Torment of Tantalus" to include below has been very difficult as it is such a complete joy to watch from opening to closing. The entire script is available for reading at SG-1 Solutions, however, for anyone wanting to see it all in print! Great episode, and mucho kudos to the entire cast, and especially Michael Shanks for making us feel the Torment of Daniel Jackson so beautifully during this episode!

Jack worrying about Daniel spending so much time going over film and papers, asking "how many hours of this stuff have you looked at?" He tries to get Daniel away from it.

Jack: Oh please, the pentagon's lost entire countries.

Daniel: Ah, Jack.

Jack: That's impossible.

Daniel: Obviously not. This doesn't make any sense. Why wouldn't somebody have told us this. Why would they stop their research if they actually managed to turn it on?

Jack: Holy Cow [with memories of the late great Harry Carey]

The maid letting Daniel in the house, obviously contrary to the usual policies of Catherine's household. He is so adorable and charming, I suppose she couldn't resist!

Jack, now doing a Daniel, and pouring over the released pentagon papers, covering up for Daniel being away when Hammond inquires as to Daniel's whereabouts.

Daniel, out of those green SG-1 uniforms, and in lovely every day casual wear [little things get to mean alot when inundated with hours of nothing but those bulky green uniforms!]

Catherine: He was so young, so full of passion, like you; you reminded me of him when I first saw you it's why I knew you'd solve the mysteries of the gate.

Daniel: Catherine, I wasn't supposed to show you this, actually I wasn't supposed to show you any of this, but now ... computer enhancements from the film footage; I was able to isolate the chevrons that were locked in before Ernest went through.

Catherine: On Abydos?

Daniel: No, another planet with similiar coordinates ... and we can go there.

Hammond being so angry ... oops, Daniel is in truuuuuble! Jack to the rescue! The classic look Jack gives Daniel when Hammond asks him, "Colonel, are you aware of the request Dr. Jackson has most currently tabled", and how Daniel looks away from him; Jack's "you've gotta go that one step further, don't ya?", shaking his finger at him as Daniel sits.

When did Sam meet Catherine?????

Catherine: You speak.

Teal'c: When it is appropriate.

Daniel and Jack holding on to Catherine as they go through the stargate..."it's a piece of cake".

Daniel: You okay?

Catherine: That was some piece of cake!

Things that make the viewer go "oh my": The reaction at seeing Ernest for the first time... Sam's "oh my", Jack's more tender and regretful sounding "for crying out loud", Daniel's "we're real"; the hug and their expressions.

Ernest: Going home?

Daniel: Yes, we're taking you home.

Ernest: So much time. Did no one try again?

Daniel: That's a long story.

Sam: I don't think the heart ever grows old.

Sam and Daniel sitting on the steps together; very cute.

Daniel: We call this the dial home device; basically, you enter the correct address and....

Jack: Daniel, why don't you just show him.

Ernest: Does this mean we're not going home?

Things that make the viewer go "aw": Ernest showing Daniel, Catherine and Jack the meeting room with all the writings on the wall. The look of wonder and questioning as they gaze upon the symbols floating in the air. Jack recognizing the elements (hey, he contributed to the intellectual conversation...lol). Daniel's realization and how excited he gets about the meaning of life stuff he is witnessing.

Daniel: The basic elements are what make up the universe; they are the basic building blocks.....of course. How do you ensure universal communication? You reduce the method of communication to the most basic elements common to everyone and everything that exists in the universe. Jack, this is a true universal language. [egads, he just loves to share with Jack who can only stare back and try to sympathize with the feelings of his friend.]

Ernest: Turn the page.

Daniel: What?

Ernest: Turn the page.

Daniel: Are you saying that this .....this is like a book?

Ernest: i tried to read it; I tried to understand it.

Daniel: 146 elements, letters and word symbols...if they're letters, if they're pictographic... I mean this could take a lifetime.

Ernest: More.

Daniel: [realizing what he had just said and apologizing] Oh, sorry.

Jack: Daniel, before your head explodes, may I remind you that we've got more important things to deal with right now.

Daniel: How can you say that? Don't you know what this could mean?

Jack: Actually, no.

Daniel: This could be the key to understanding our existence, everyone, everything's existence.

Ernest: Collaboration of the knowledge of these 4 alien species.

Jack: None of which will mean squat if we don't get out of here.

Daniel so wants Jack to understand; Jack looks at Daniel's excitement with such unknown mystery, seeing how excited Daniel is, but it's beyond him; yet Daniel tries with great passion to get Jack to understand the importance of it all.

Daniel: This is Thor's race.

Ernest: Thor was an alien?

Daniel: That's another long story, but a good one!

Poor Daniel when the others come up with the news about the dhd; about to lose yet another dream. It can break a person's heart to watch Daniel respond in these kind of situations.

Daniel: What's up, guys?

Jack: Step away from the pedestal, Daniel.

Daniel: What? Why?

Sam: The dial home device just fell through the floor into the ocean.

Daniel: So what are we going to do?

Sam: That thing may have a power source in it that we can use to get the gate working.

Daniel: Ah, no. You don't understand. This book may contain knowledge of the universe. I mean this is meaning of life stuff. I have to get more of it down on paper before we leave; there has to be something more you can use. What about using energy from Teal'c's staff?

Sam: It isn't powerful enough.

Catherine: Daniel, please; there isn't much time. We have to get inside that thing.

Jack: This whole place could join the dhd at the bottom of the ocean any minute, so please.

Daniel: Great. Shoot it. [another dream shot down for our Daniel]

Jack again using simplicity, showing he is not as dumb as he wants people to think: "I'm obviously no scientist but ah couldn't we use that Ben Franklin thing?"

Catherine: Daniel won't come up; he's obsessed with that thing; so much like you used to be.

Ernest: The torment of tantalus.

Catherine: What?

Ernest: Tantalus was a king in greek mythology, banished to hades, forced to stand in water that receded whenever he tried to drink.

Catherine: Everlasting, unending temptation.

Ernest: He was reaching for something that was out of reach.

Catherine: That sounds familiar. Some might say that's what makes a man great. We all accepted what was within our grasp.

Ernest: Sometimes what we have is of more value. It takes a great man to recognize that. I didn't. I was a fool.

Catherine: Ernest, you've suffered enough. No sense wasting time in the past, right.

Ernest: No prize is worth obtaining if you can never share it; there would be no point; believe me, I know.

Daniel: What you did was courageous.

Ernest: What I did was stupid.

Jack: C'mon boys, we've go to go, now.

Daniel: I'm staying.

Jack: What?

Daniel: Look, I will be fine down here.

Jack: Daniel, we can come back.

Daniel: No! What if the castle crumbles around the gate? I mean this... this could all be lost. If I stay, I could unbury the gate again.

Jack: What if the gate falls into the ocean?

Daniel: I am really to take that risk.

Jack: I'm not; let's go! [grabbing him with great force]

Daniel: Jack ... please

Daniel: Close one.

Jack: You think?

Sam: You don't know how close.

Technician: Chevron seven will not engage.

Jack: I think it's safe to say the place is gone.

Ernest: You still have my book.

Catherine: Captain Carter is working on a computer model right now.

Jack: And here's the bright side ----you're alive.

Daniel: Yes, thanks to you [looking at Ernest ...and I object...I seem to recall Jack forcibly removing the boy not one scene ago! Ernest may have been influentual, but I think Jack deserves some credit here for saving our Daniel's life!]

Ernest: Look at this way, if you ever run into those aliens who made up the language, you can ask them what it means.

Catherine: You better let us know this time.

Daniel: I will. Jack: Catherine, hug me.

Teal'c: Then I will speak of it no further.

Daniel: What was that?

Jack: I don't know; I'll find out.

Daniel: We are all behind Teal'c, Sir.

Jack: We're pretty sure of at least one guy.

Hammond: This is not my first barbeque, Colonel.

Teal'c: I risk no one's life but my own.

Hammond is an old softie if you give him a chance. I love how he dresses down Jack; knows he's being deceptive; and it's fun to watch Sam and Daniel aid in the cover up.

Sam: Daniel....glasses. (cute -- protective --- love it)

when first arriving on Chulak, leaving the stargate, what the heck is Daniel doing? He trip on his outfit? Lose a shoe?

Michael steps on something as they run down the hill; too cute -- turns and looks back ... keep rolling!

Teal'c: They are friends, Colonel O'Neill, Captain Carter, Daniel Jackson, warriors of great skill and cunning.

Sam: Ah, Teal'c, thats'...

Teal'c: My first teacher, Bra'tac, the greatest jaffa master I've ever known.

Jack: It's a pleasure to meet you, Sir. [Bra'tac brushes by Jack almost totally ignoring him, which is fun since it is Jack getting a taste of his own medicine aka: how many times has he done this type of thing to our Daniel?]

Bra'tac: [to Sam] You! You were among the warriors who defeated the palace guard at Chulak .. a human woman?

Sam: Hey, I'll have you know I keep my....

Bra'tac: [to Daniel] And you [bites Daniel's hand] ..a warrior of great skill and cunning? I could snap you like kindling. How could you bring these hasshak with you?

Jack: Hey! Hey! Hey! Who you calling a hassick? ... what's a hassick?

Bra'tac: You challenge me hasshak?

Jack: Ah, no i don't think we came to fight you.

Bra'tac: A shame.

Jack: We're here on a mission; if you don't want to be a part of it, just say so.

Bra'tac: You choose your friends well, Teal'c, though were I a hundred years younger, it might not have been so easy.

Jack: You're over 100 years old? [extending his hand to Bra'tac] I'm sorry.

[Whoops...down goes jack]

Bra'tac: 133.

Jack: You must work out.

Jack: Captain, I want you and Daniel to go back to the stargate, take up positions where you can lay down cover fire. we might need it.

Sam: Yes, sir.

Daniel: [not wanting to leave] A minute ago we were warriors of great skill and cunning.

Jack: I serve the SGC under a General Hammond.

Bra'tac: So this Hammond is ...

Jack: Just a man, a very good, a very bald man from Texas.

Daniel: Bingo goa'uld larvae.

Sam: Out here in the open like this; no guards.

Daniel: Well who on chulak needs to steal one.

Sam: We do.

Daniel: Right.

Sam: Okay we can do this.

Daniel: I'm ready.

Sam: Okay, on three. One, two, three!

Daniel: Okay on four.

Sam: Four... ah, I really really really hate these things. C'mon!

Sam: Daniel, what are you thinking?

Daniel: Just that every single one of these infant goa'ulds will one day take a human life and all I have to do is...

Sam: If we kill them when they are as volnerable as they are right now, we'd be no better than the goa'uld ... let's go

Daniel starts to walk away, but then turns and shoots, destroying the casing which contains the infant goa'ulds; Sam, somewhat stunned, approaches him and stares. Daniel looks at her, and does a quick double take, noticing the surprise on her face. Nothing is said. Sam takes the P90, which Daniel relinguishes freely. They turn and leave, still no words spoken. It's a very intense moment during the show, displaying a rarely seen side of Daniel.

Daniel and Sam still heading towards the stargate, after the shooting incident. He's eating and asks Sam, do you think these things need to be fed?" when they are attacked. Sam totally takes charge. They take cover by a big tree as Daniel, still holding on to the food bar he was eating, finally tosses it aside and pulls out his gun. Sam throws a grenade, ending the brief skirmish. Daniel comments, "that was insane" and they move on.

I still don't quite understand why Teal'c didn't bring Drey'ac and Ray'ac back to earth when that was the plan originally.

Jack: Alright, here's the plan.

Bra'tac: You will do as I say.

Jack: Right.

The salute by Jack and Sam at the end to Bra'tac (what respect he has earned from Jack) and Daniel's subsequent wave goodbye.

Hammond: Colonel, where's Dr. Jackson?

Teal'c: Daniel Jackson.

Sam: He didn't make it, Sir.

Jack: Daniel's dead, Sir.

Sam: He's gone, isn't he? Why can't I stop shaking?

Janet: You're still in shock. Want to tell me how it happened?

Sam: He screamed and there was this fire, and he called out for help and he screamed and then he was gone; he was just.....

Jack: He said .. he said, "Colonel, help me" and then he was gone.

Jack in agony over Daniel's apparent death, and the torment during his interview with Hammond.

The memorial ... how can we not shed some tears here:

Jack: Daniel Jackson made this place happen. As a member of SG-1, he was our voice, our conscience. He was a very courageous man. He was a good man. For those of us lucky to have known him, he was also a friend.

The original script was even better. It went like this, "Daniel Jackson made this - this place - happen. I don't know how many brilliant minds tried to unlock what was child's play to him. As a member of SG1 he walked into alien worlds unafraid. He was our voice...and our conscience. (beat) He was my friend."

Hammond: We commend Daniel Jackson's spirit to the universe he opened up for us and pledge to continue our journey of discovery in his memory; may he rest in peace.

Jack: ....so we're sitting around eating some kind of gourmet Abydonian cuisine. Daniel tells Sha're he's gonna show us this cartouche thing but before we leave she stands up and plants a kiss on him that makes his face disappear for a day.

Jack breaking Hammond's car window after hearing Daniel's voice calling for help. His considering retiring again. The entire mourning of his friend.

The entire scene at Daniel's apartment, as they go through things, and Sam reads from Daniel's journal concerning the Abydos mission.

Sam: Colonel O'Neill thinks I'm a geek; I have no idea how to get us back; we'll never get paid.

Sam: Oh wow, he must have written this right after we got back... Sha're is gone; Jack says we'll find her; if anyone can, he can.

Jack: Oh c'mon, that's his diary. What's he gonna think if....

Sam: I wonder what they're going to do with all this stuff?

Jack: Maybe give it to a museum.... or start one.

Sam seeing and hearing Daniel calling for help.

Jack: I'm telling you something is wrong.

Sam: What's wrong here, Colonel, is that Daniel is dead.

Jack: Is he?

Sam: You were there; we were all there.

Jack: Then why don't I believe it. I keep expecting him to walk through the door. I keep getting these...screw this packing, let's get back to the base. [go Jack go]

Janet: What are you looking for?

Jack: I just...I thought...

Teal'c: Daniel Jackson was returning.

Sam: I thought the same thing; why? Is he gone or isn't he?

Nem: You cannot leave this place.

[Daniel's look of despair, hits head against wall, slinks down to sit on the floor]

Daniel's little jump and "tell me more". He's so cute when he starts to remember something; gets excited at the possibility of going home.

Nem: There will be much pain. You may die.

Daniel: I would rather die than stay here with the knowledge that I will never see my wife or my friends again.

Jack: someone's been messing with our heads.

The hypnosis scene, Sam remembering, getting ultra upset, her very tormented "help him!..darkness..cold..wet.....We've got to get to the water.......We've got to get out of here ... my god, Colonel, we left him behind; left him behind. Well done, Amanda!

Jack: I know. It's alright; we're going back; we're going back.

Jack calling out for Daniel at the ocean's edge, and his "We're not leaving here without him this time, Captain" line.

Now, here's a pet peeve of mine ... sorry gang ... but after all that torment, shouldn't we have a tad more excitement upon seeing Daniel? The ending tag is fun, but this eppy cries out for some kind of emotion ...a hug, "glad to see you", something!

Daniel: Ah this .. this is a long story.

Sam: Yeah, I'll bet.

Jack: Tell us about it over sushi.

Daniel: That's funny. I will after I go get some sleep.

Jack: Ah, home.

Sam: Yeah.

Jack: About that apartment!

Daniel: Oh, you didn't.

Sam: The day after the memorial service.

Daniel: Memorial service?

Sam: The colonel said some nice things.

Daniel: He did ... he did?

Anyone think that smile after the sushi line was a bit too RDAish, and Daniel's "that's funny" almost a Michael response? I find myself wondering if that was scripted or some inside joke. RDA looked extremely pleased with himself, a bit out of Jack character!

Now, as said above, this story cries out for a just a tad more emotion in the tag than was given. I do not consider myself to be a good creative writer, but it only needs a line or two, a hug ... nothing much ... so I wrote it! Submitted for your approval, as Rod Serling might say, I give you my version of the ending of "Fire and Water", interspersing my additions with the scene dialogue of the original writers in the episode as it exists today.

Sam, extremely upset at realizing that Daniel was left behind on the planet, rises from her chair in tears. Jack reassures her, “we're going back. We're going to find him.”

Jack, Sam and Teal'c return to Oannes, the world they had recently visited, and they approach the water's edge with caution. Jack calls out, “Daniel” loudly, hoping for some kind of response. Teal'c, holding his staff weapon firmly, stares to his left, calling out “Daniel Jackson, are you here?”. Sam, grasping her P90, looks all around her, at the vast ocean to her front to the fiery desert behind her. There is a desperation to her look; she is definitely troubled. There seems to be no sign of her dear friend anywhere.

“Don't worry, Captain,” Jack says reassuringly. “Daniel's here somewhere, and we're going to find him. This time, we are not leaving without him.” “Yes, Sir” Sam acknowledges, wanting to believe Jack is right.

Suddenly, there is a stir in the waters. SG-1 quickly get to the ready position, not knowing what is about to happen. All are ready to defend or attack, if necessary, at a moment's notice. The blue-figured character known as Nem appears out of the ocean, and reaches the shore. The team aims their weapons at him. Jack speaks sharply, “Who are you, and what have you done with our friend?”

Nem stares intently at Teal'c, then Sam and finally Jack, but doesn't speak. “Look”, Jack says, growing impatient, “I don't know what your plan was or why you messed with our minds, but we're not leaving here without our friend. Now where the heck is he?”

“Sir!”, Sam exclaims, “look out there”, indicating the same area from which Nem had just appeared. Another ripple of water is seen and a burst of waters heard. “Daniel?”, Jack yells out, not yet convinced and ready to relieve the slimy alien of his last breath if necessary.

“Don't shoot!”, Daniel exclaims, wanting to protect Nem from harm. A light smile of relief appears on Sam's face. She is glad to see Daniel, but still, the situation is tense.

Daniel swims anxiously to shore. As is typical of him, he goes first to Nem, needing to make sure they part amicably before seeing to his own needs with his friends. Jack quickly goes to Daniel's side, “Daniel, what the heck is going on?” Before Jack can even finish his sentence, Sam also approaches, asking urgently, “Are you okay, Daniel?” “I'm fine”, he responds, and then continues with Nem.

“Nem, you have your answer. Now let us go.” Nem looks at SG-1 and then says, “you may go.” “I'm sorry I couldn't give you the answer you wanted,” Daniel adds. “I am sorry also,” Nem acknowledges sadly. “We could still become friends, your people and mine, ”Daniel continues hopefully, with Sam explaining, “that's why we were here; we meant no harm”.

Nem answers, “Perhaps in time...and in time, Daniel, you will find what fate Sha're”. Daniel stares intently, having heard Nem words and wanting deeply to believe in them, and Daniel watches as his former captor heads back to his home beneath the waters.

With Nem gone, the team's full attention goes to Daniel. With weapons at ease, Sam gives Daniel a warm embrace, telling him “we thought you were dead.” “I thought I was going to be,” Daniel ripostes. Jack nears, and at first places just an arm at Daniel's back as if to pat him a welcome home, but then finds himself hugging his returned team member. A host of thoughts race through Jack's mind. How did this so-called meek archaeologist/linguist manage to become so much a part of his life? What happened to that “geek” Jack had once believed Daniel to be. It didn't matter. All that did, was that Daniel was back, and he was safe. A quick hug was all he could bring himself to offer though; he had that facade to keep up! “It's good to have you back, Daniel”, Jack finally says, with a joy and peace in his voice.

“Daniel Jackson,” Teal'c inquires, “why did Nem wish to keep you captive?”

“Ah this .. this is a long story,” Daniel answers, pointing out the ocean. Sam retorts, “Yeah, I'll bet,” and then Jack adds, “Tell us about it over sushi”, with a smile and joking tone. He seems very pleased with himself. Daniel, however, appears not to enjoy the joke, stating wryly, “That's funny,” and then ignoring Jack's taunt, “I will, after I go get some sleep.” The reunited SG-1 team begins to walk back to the stargate, and as they do, we hear:

Jack: “Ah, home.“

Sam: “Yeah.“

Jack: “About that apartment...“

Daniel: “Oh, you didn't.“

Sam: “The day after the memorial service.“

Daniel: “Memorial service?“

Sam: “The colonel said some nice things.“

Daniel: “He did ... he did?“

Fade out -- and ready for the next mission!

Dr. Kleinhouse: I read a journal article once by a young archaelogist .. what was his name .. Dr. Jackson, Dr. Daniel Jackson. He was laughed out of academia for his preposterous ideas about a connection between ancient civilizations.

Dr. Cole: Maybe Dr. Jackson was on to something.

Hathor: We are Hathor; you would be wise to unbind us and kneel before your goddess.

Daniel sitting down after Hathor blows on his hand, beginning to succomb already, poor baby

Hathor: You with the crown of marble.

Jack: She might mean you, Sir.

Poor Danny -- kisses Hathor (what would Sha're say?)

Daniel: General, I'd like permission to have Hathor come down here and debrief us.

Jack: Whoa, Danny, I don't think so.

Jack playing errand boy for Hathor (water), and there goes Jack after getting a bit too close to Hathor; that's the men - so easy to maniupulate!

Daniel: You're like a queen bee; you create the goa'ulds. [and still, he's powerless]

Janet: So what do you suggest, captain?

Sam: I suggest we neutralize her.

Daniel: DNA; you need DNA to prevent rejection.

Hathor: The code of life; we do so enjoy the method of precuring the code in your species. {removes his glasses] It is much more pleasureable than most.

Daniel: I bet. [she removes his jacket]

Hathor: Since you are to be our first pharoah, you will honor us by being the one to contribute the code.

Daniel: You want me to help you create more goa'ulds?

Hathor: Now that Ra is gone; we are finally free to rule this planet with you, our beloved, at our side for all eternity. ...and there they go [good thing this doesn't air on the playboy channel]

Sam: They are all pretty loopy right now.

The woman taking charge ... way fun, especially Janet! Her alter ego is definitely at work here, especially when she holds the gun on poor Danny who is barely conscience!

Sam: ...besides when was the last time you saw a new woman get assigned here?

Sam talking to Daniel, so softly, "Daniel, you okay?"

Sam: Mama said there'd be days like this.

Janet: Really? My ex-husband said that. 'Are you out of your mind honey buns; there is a reason they call it this man's army."

Sam: This man's army? Your husband actually said that?

Janet: Yes, so of course, I explained it wasn't the army, it was the air force, and they've had woman for decades.

Sam: Maybe it's just me...I can't figure out how to feel like one of the guys with these guys, you know what I mean? I always feel like I'm "the girl".

Janet: There are five women in here very alone.

Sam: Why do I feel like I'm in a "Women Behind Bars" movie?

Sam: Yeah, my career is over. [after knocking out Hammond]

Jack: Daniel, let's go, move it [but Daniel is transfixed, locked onto Hathor and the fire]

Jack: [softly and caringly] C'mon, Danny [he and Sam take him out of the room].

Jack: Did you find anything?

Janet: Probably nothing we can use. Maybe we'll at least get a cellular level analysis on the goa'ulds; maybe even find some dna information.

Daniel: Alot of that will probably be mine.

Jack: You?

Daniel: Yeah.

[oh to be a fly on the wall when Jack and Daniel go home that night and talk about the day!]

Hammond: Good job, Ladies.

Jack: Nice job.

Daniel: Yeah.
