In the front yard, there is the usual bed of flowers at the base of the shrubs along the front of the house. And we sometimes have a few pots at the base of the front steps, or on the steps, to one side. But that wasn't enough garden for us, so we added an L-shaped white picket fence, just for a backdrop and focus for an additional garden area in the front yard that we call The Fence Garden, which has a lot of day lillies. Now there are also several tall bearded iris, and a few dwarf iris.
We also have two side gardens. The left side garden is mostly lilies. The right side garden is mostly herbs, in pots.
In the back yard, gardening is mostly limited to the deck. We have flower boxes on the railings on two sides of the deck.
I have installed automatic watering for most of the gardens. Soaker hoses that are slightly buried water the front and left side gardens. A drip system serves the pots of the right side garden and the flower boxes on the back deck. The two systems are controlled by different timers because they work so differently. The soaker system operates slowly for about an hour at a time; but the drip system operates quickly for a few minutes at a time.
